CSUN Nearly Rallies from 19 Points in Close Loss at Hawai'i
1/16/2023 10:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU---CSUN Men's Basketball rallied from 19 down in the second half to pull to within one but fell just short by a 58-51 margin at Hawai'i on Monday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Dionte Bostick led the comeback charge by scoring 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half. The Matadors had an opportunity to tie the game in the closing seconds but a potential tying 3-pointer went short off the front rim.
Dearon Tucker gave the Matadors a 3-2 lead with a traditional 3-point play in the early moments of the game but Hawai'i took advantage of a CSUN four-plus minute scoring drought and went on a 10-0 run. The Rainbow Warriors would extend their lead to double digits (18-7) on a Samuta Avea jumper at the 9:05 mark of the first half.
Late in the first half, the Bows went on an 11-0 run, capped by a Jovon McClanahan jumper for an 18-point edge. Bostick made two free throws in the final second of the period to trim the deficit to 33-17 at intermission.
A 3-pointer from Kamaka Hepa extended the Hawai'i lead to 19 points at 38-19 in the first two minutes of the second half. CSUN though showed little quit in the second half. Bostick knocked down a 3-pointer then Atin Wright followed with a mid-range jumper. After a second consecutive defensive stop, De'Sean Allen-Eikens picked up an offensive rebound and drilled a trey to quickly cut the deficit to 11. The Matadors collected four more defensive stops while scoring a pair of baskets to pull to within 38-32.
Noel Coleman slowed the Matador uprising with a three but Tucker answered with a basket in the paint. Bostick then scored five-straight points to bring the Matadors to within 41-39 with 10:43 left to play. The lead would extend to five for Hawai'i before Bostick scored on a drive. Moments later, Ethan Igbanugo found Tucker for an easy two, cutting the lead to 44-43.
A 6-0 Hawai'i run extended the lead back to seven with 4:22 left to play but the Matadors would forge one final rally down the stretch. Bostick found the bottom of the net then set up Tucker on the next CSUN possession for a three-point play, again trimming the deficit to one (52-51).
After a Bernardo da Silva basket, the Matadors kept the Rainbow Warriors without a field goal for two minutes and had one last attempt to tie with less than a minute to play. On that possession, Allen-Eikens would have a look from beyond the arc and straight away but his shot went off the front rim. Hawai'i sealed the victory with four made free throws in the closing seconds.

ACCORDING TO COACH TRENT JOHNSON
"I thought we competed at a high level. We got behind the eight-ball because we missed some open shots and it sort of frustrated us and it affected our ability to guard. We came out the second half we competed hard and executed offensively versus a good team. Most games like this where it's physical and highly contested, it usually gets decided at the free throw line. They went 20 times, we went 10.
"I thought Dionte was good. For the most part, we played well versus a very good team at home - their long and athletic. We have to regroup, there's a bunch of wounded players in that locker room right now. We have a long flight tomorrow then we have to get ready to play UC Santa Barbara."
