12/28/2023 9:14:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball won its fifth consecutive game with an 83-73 victory over Cal Poly in the Big West opener on Thursday night at Mott Athletics Center. Dionte Bostick scored a season-high 22 points while Jasman Sangha recorded a career-high 19 points and De'Sean Allen-Eikens chipped in with 19 points as well.
CSUN's 10-3 start to the season is the program's best since the 2007-08 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN started slowly by making 1-of-11 shots while the Mustangs staked to a 10-3 lead. CSUN though righted the ship, scoring the next seven points as De'Sean Allen-Eikens evened the game up on a layup. However, the story of the first half would be Jasman Sangha who scored a new career high in points in the period. During one stretch, Sangha scored eight consecutive CSUN points as his layup at the 9:39 mark put the Matadors ahead 20-16.
Â
Jordan Brinson hit back-to-back threes near the six-minute mark to push the lead further to 32-19. After consecutive CSUN steals led to baskets, the Matadors built their biggest lead of the game at 38-21. Sangha finished with two more baskets, pushing his half total to 17 points. Cal Poly though closed the half with the final four points to trim the CSUN lead to 46-35 at the break.
After intermission, Cal Poly capitalized on CSUN turnovers to chip away at the lead. During a four-plus minute stretch, CSUN turned the ball over seven times. After the Mustangs closed to within six, Allen-Eikens slowed the uprising momentarily with a basket. However, Cal Poly scored the next seven to pull to within 55-54 with 10:57 on the clock. Sangha gave the Matadors some breathing room with another field goal then Jared Barnett followed with a timely basket. Allen-Eikens drained a pair at the free throw line to push the lead back to nine at 63-54. CSUN soon stretched its lead to double-digits before receiving a dunk from Bostick at the six-minute mark for a 69-57 lead.
The Matadors opened a 76-63 lead, but Cal Poly made one final push and scored the next four. CSUN though made six free throws over the final 1:42 while Bostick emphatically threw down a dunk to help secure a win.

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH ANDY NEWMAN
"Jasman was really big for us. For him to step up like he did was huge. We had to have really good play out of that position, and he stepped up and did it for us. I was really proud of him.
[Our team] is super coachable. As you saw tonight, they're defending their butt off. They're rebounding the ball. If we continue to do those two things, we're going to continue to have the success that we've started out with here."
