CSUN Falls on the Road at CSU Bakersfield
2/9/2023 9:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball suffered a 73-58 loss at CSU Bakersfield on Thursday at the Icardo Center. De'Sean Allen-Eikens had a team-high 14 points to go with four assists and two blocked shots while Ethan Igbanugo added 10 points. The Matadors were unable to slow down a hot-shooting Roadrunner team that made nine threes and shot nearly 50 percent for the game.
Â
The Roadrunners came out quickly, making their first four shots from 3-point range to put the Matadors into an early hole. Travis Hensen, who made two of those 3-point baskets, would throw down a dunk for a CSUB 14-4 lead forcing a CSUN timeout. The Matadors battled back to within seven after an Allen-Eikens jumper at the 12:16 mark but the Roadrunners continued their red-hot shooting for the remainder of the half. CSU Bakersfield would make seven-straight field goals during one stretch as the lead swelled to 33-16.
Â
Allen-Eikens shouldered the load offensively in the first half with eight points including a jumper to bring CSUN to within 14 points. Bakersfield though maintained its double-digit lead due in large part to 60 percent shooting from the floor. After Marvin McGhee III drained a three and Antavion Collum made a jumper, CSUN was looking up at a 19-point deficit. Bakersfield would lead by as many as 21 in the first half and took a 43-24 advantage into intermission.
The Matadors picked up field goals from Dearon Tucker and Allen-Eikens out of halftime to pull to within 43-28. However, a three minute scoring drought coupled with eight consecutive points from Hensen stretched the lead to the biggest of the night at 53-30.
Off the bench, Lamine Niang began a CSUN 6-0 run that again brought the Matadors to within 15 points but the Matadors would not get closer the rest of the way. Collum capped an 8-2 Bakersfield run that helped put the game out of reach. In the closing minutes, Arman Pezeshkian tallied six points and one steal in two minutes of action for the Matadors to wrap up the night.
GAME NOTES
The Matadors (5-19, 2-11 Big West) shot 45.2 percent for the game but converted on just 2-of-15 shots from the 3-point arc (13.3 percent). CSUN made 18-of-23 attempts at the free throw line (78.3 percent).
