#21 CSUN Faces Two Ranked Teams on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo (2-0) returns to action with a pair of matches against top-25 opponents on Saturday at California Baptist's Lancer Joust. The Matadors square off with No. 25 Biola at 8 a.m. to open the day then face No. 18 San José State at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available for both contests.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN began the 2024 campaign with a pair of victories at Long Beach State's Beach Invite on Jan. 20. The Matadors knocked off California Baptist 16-12 before beating the Claremont Mudd-Scripps 12-9 to close the day.
It would be a historic game against CBU as junior Dorottya Telek broke the single-game record for goals with nine. CSUN though had to fight off CBU late, breaking open a slim 12-10 lead after three periods with four goals in the fourth quarter to seal a win. Senior Meghan Lopez finished with 15 saves against the Lancers in front of the cage.
CSUN made it a perfect 2-0 day by pulling out a tight decision against the Claremont Mudd Scripps. Once again, Telek led the way, this time scoring seven goals. CSUN though led by just 5-4 at halftime and 9-7 through three quarters. CMS, last season's Division III national runner-up, clawed to within one goal in the fourth quarter before CSUN scored three of the last four goals to claim the win. Freshman Kiana Kellner posted nine saves in her CSUN debut at goalkeeper.
TELEK CONTINUES TO MAKE HISTORY
Fresh off a banner 2023 season, Dorottya Telek made further history last Saturday with her nine goals against CBU. The nine tallies surpass the previous single-game scoring record of seven goals, scored by five different players previously including Telek. In 2023, Telek shattered the single-season goal record at CSUN with 101 goals, surpassing Whitney Delgado's mark of 80 goals set in 2010. On the school's all-time career goal list, Telek sits in fifth place with 193 tallies, and is now within 37 goals of breaking the career record of 229 goals set by Madeleine Sanchez in 2018.
CSUN STAYS AT #21
For the second-straight week CSUN is ranked No. 21 in the CWPA national top-25 poll. Prior to their No. 21 ranking this season, CSUN had not been ranked as high as 21st since Feb. 1, 2023. Overall, CSUN has been continuously been ranked in the top-25 since Feb. 16, 2022.
MATADOR LEADERS THROUGH WEEK ONE
Dorottya Telek's 16 goals and 18 points lead CSUN through two matches this season while junior Shelby Hovanesian is second with three goals and 12 points to go with nine assists. Senior Helena Sandhagen and junior Tatum Scarry have two goals apiece. On the defensive side, Hovanesian has three steals while Sandhagen has four field blocks. Senior goalkeeper Meghan Lopez has 15 saves in her one match this season.
SCOUTING BIOLA
The Eagles would have a historic 2023 season, winning the WWPA championship then an opening round match in the NCAA Tournament. Biola finished last year with an 18-15 record. No. 25 Biola went 1-1 last week, falling to seventh-ranked Long Beach State before beating 24th-ranked Brown. Through two games, Veralie Naranjo has scored a team-high six goals while Maria Roldan Gonzalez has netted four goals. Naranjo tallied 70 goals last season, which was second-best on the team.
Series History: CSUN played Biola for the first-ever time in women's water polo last season with the Matadors coming out on top, 9-8. Dorottya Telek had six of the Matadors' nine goals in the victory.
SCOUTING SAN JOSÉ STATE
The Spartans have gone 0-2 to start the year, but losing to a pair of top-10 ranked teams in No. 5 UC Irvine and No. 9 Fresno State last week. San José State went 12-20 last season and 0-6 in the competitive MPSF. Darcy Spark, Ivanna Anderson-Villela and Renee Fleming have a team-leading two goals each to start the year. A total of nine newcomers are on the roster this season.
Series History: The Spartans have won 13 of 15 all-time meetings with CSUN. SJSU also has victories over the last four meetings including last season by a 6-5 decision. Although, the last two meetings between the two teams have been decided by just two goals combined. CSUN's last win in the series was in 2015.Â
