2/15/2024 5:50:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN Softball took the doubleheader from Utah Tech. The Matadors took the first game 2-0 and the second game 3-2. Over the two games, Shaylan Whatman led the team with two runs. She was followed by Mikayla Carman and Jadyn Nielsen with one each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Lauryn Carranco stayed strong as she kept the Trailblazers from scoring in the first inning. The Matadors started strong in batting as Whatman singled to first before stealing second at the bottom of first but was unable to score. Both teams continued without a score, but Utah Tech gave a scare as they had two runners on base. Carranco kept her cool and struck out the final batter to get CSUN out of a tight situation.
The Matadors returned at the bottom of the third with a vengeance. Kylie Galindo fired a double into right-center as she brought Nielson and Whatman home. The Trailblazers tried to even the score with two runners and no outs, but Carranco shut them down before they could make any runs. Utah Tech backed CSUN into a corner again at the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases, but Carranco didn't break a sweat as she struck out the next three batters. The Matadors held tight to their lead as they finished the game with a double play.
Game 2
The Trailblazers returned with a vengeance as they opened the game with two runs at the top of the first. The Matadors tried to even the score at the bottom of the first but were unable to bring the runner home. Isabella Alonso continued in the circle as she stopped Utah Tech from scoring in the second and third innings.
The Matadors returned the favor as Carman singled to first to bring home Vinessa Nunez. Kylie Galindo followed with another single to overtake the Trailblazers as Whatman and Carman scored. Alonso kept CSUN's lead at 3-2 as she didn't allow Utah Tech to make another run for the rest of the game.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"Defensively, I think we did a great job all around today. Lo and Bell did a good job in the circle, keeping us in there when things were kind of going against them."
UP NEXT
The Matadors continue the CSUN Matador Diamond Classic with two games on Saturday, Feb. 15. The first game will be against Pacific at 11 a.m. The second will be against Utah Tech at 1 p.m.
