2/22/2024 9:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball could not hold on to a late lead in the final minute of play as UC Davis pulled out a 66-65 decision on Thursday evening at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Dionte Bostick scored a team-high 23 points to go with five rebounds while De'Sean Allen-Eikens added 21 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN dug a 10-1 hole to start the game as the Matadors did not make a field goal until the 13:51 mark of the first half. However, the Matadors stayed within striking distance as their defense kept them close. CSUN eventually began to put the ball in the hoop and eventually completed a 13-3 run to take its first lead at 17-16 on a Bostick jumper. The Aggies though quickly went on a 7-2 run to take the lead right back at 23-19 at the five-minute mark. Leo Debruhl gave the Aggies a 26-23 edge with 2:51 on the clock, but the Matadors controlled the final two-plus minutes of the first half. CSUN closed with a 6-0 run as a late Bostick jumper helped give the Matadors a 29-26 lead at intermission.
UC Davis would respond to start the second half, quickly going on a 7-0 run out of the gate. The seesaw game continued with CSUN answering with a 7-0 run of its own with Gianni Hunt giving the Matadors a 36-33 lead on a three. The Aggies stormed in front on another Debruhl three, but Bostick answered with a basket to even the game at 41-41. Near the nine-minute mark, De'Sean Allen-Eikens converted on a three-point play for a CSUN 46-43 lead. After the teams took turns trading leads, Allen-Eikens scored five-straight points, highlighted by a three to give the Matadors a 62-57 lead with 2:43 to play.
The Aggies would get timely baskets from Ty Johnson down the stretch as his three with 57 seconds to play cut the CSUN lead to 65-64. CSUN came up empty on its next possession but picked up a defensive stop on the other end. Hunt was fouled on the next time down the floor but he missed both free throws. Johnson would drive down the lane moments later and get fouled where he made both free throw attempts. CSUN had one last look down by one, however, Hunt missed a floater and Keonte Jones could not convert a tip-in layup to close the game.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH ANDY NEWMAN
"Tough game. Tough finish. We have to learn how to finish games better."
