#23 CSUN Knocks Off Siena in Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo posted a wire-to-wire 14-5 win over Siena in its home opener on Thursday at Matador Pool. Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal had four goals and two assists apiece while Shelby Hovanesian added three goals and two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pal opened up the scoring 36 seconds into the match while Telek added to the lead less than minute later for an early 2-0 lead. Lucia Fernandez Caballero put Siena on the scoreboard at the 6:22 mark of the first period, but CSUN answered with a 3-0 run. Hovanesian hit a goal during the run followed by back-to-back tallies from Telek. CSUN picked up goals from Kelsey Meyers and Hovaensian off power plays before Siena closed the period with a late goal to cut the lead to 7-3.
The second quarter featured just two total goals, one from each side, as Hovanesian gave CSUN its only goal. Fernandez Caballero brought Siena to within 8-5 early in the third period, but CSUN would not let Siena score again for the remainder of the match. Telek hit the net at the 7:11 mark of the third period before Pal scored three consecutive goals for the Matadors. Jessica Matkovich and Jenna Olson got into the scoring act in the fourth quarter as CSUN outscored Siena 6-1 in the second half to win by nine.

CSUN will compete in the 2024 Convergence Tournament, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman. The Matadors take on No. 23 Marist on the campus Pomona-Pitzer at 10:15 a.m. on Friday. From there, CSUN will travel to Chapman to face the Panthers later in the day at 3:15 p.m.

- In goal, Meghan Lopez played the first two quarters, finishing with five saves. Samantha Bright had six saves total in the second half.
