CSUN Track & Field Returns to Action at Houston Invite

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field heads to Houston, Texas for its final tuneup before the MPSF Championships. The Matadors will compete at the University of Houston's Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. while running events begin at 1:30 p.m. The meet will be streamed via uhcougars.com.

CSUN's men's track & field team was ranked No. 1 in the MPSF in this week's USTFCCAA conference rankings while the Matadors were ranked No. 17 in the west regional rankings. On the women's side, CSUN is 10th in the MPSF and 34th in the region.Â
After CSUN competes in Houston on Friday, the Matadors will compete at the 2024 MPSF Championships from Feb. 25-25 in Spokane, Wash.

CSUN would compete at two meets from Jan. 26-27 as the team was split with Matadors traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. for the New Mexico Team Open and to Seattle, Wash. for the UW Invitational.
Trey Knight would be another standout on the men's side, winning his second-straight weight throw event with a toss of 21.58m (70-9) at the UW Invite. Bryson Williams finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.96m (49-1) while he was also third in the long jump, tying his personal record with a leap of 7.27m (23-10.25). Also in Seattle, Nicole Contreras registered the ninth-best 3000m time in school history at 10:12.68 as she finished 67th at the event. Anastasia Bampali came in sixth in the triple jump, registering a leap of 11.74m (38-6.25).
At the New Mexico Team Open, David Phillips, Jr. registered the second-best all-time 200m time at :20.98 as he finished eighth at the event. A day later, Phillips would finish 15th in the 60m preliminaries with a time of :6.82. Chase Mars posted second-fastest time in the 60m with a time of :6.73 while he came in eighth at the event. Mars also registered the fourth-best 200m time at :21.14 to come in ninth at the event. In the 200m unseeded event, James Crawford posted a personal record of :21.03, good enough for fourth place in CSUN history and Gabe Martinez was eighth in the 400m unseeded with a personal record of :48.14, also eighth-best on record in school history. On the women's side, Kaliyah Poston finished 11th in the 200m unseeded with a time of :24.45. Amani Britton was also ninth in the shot put with a toss of 13.09m (42-11.50), good enough for a new personal record.
PHILLIPS COLLECTS MPSF ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
David Phillips, Jr. earned his first career MPSF Male Athlete of the Week award on Jan. 30. His time of :21.02 in the 200m was the second-best in school history and set a new personal record. That time was an MPSF season-best and tied for 32nd nationally. His showing in the 60m (:6.82) was good for 15th overall at the event. Phillips is the second Matador to earn MPSF Athlete of the Week honors this season, joining Trey Knight on Jan. 16.
