NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball fell to UC San Diego 79-69 on Senior Night on Saturday at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Keonte Jones led the way with 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. De'Sean Allen-Eikens added 17 points and seven rebounds in his final home game while Gianni Hunt had 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jones gave the Matadors their first lead at 10-9 nearly six minutes into the first half. UCSD would lean on the 3-point shot throughout the night as Tyler McGhie hit three early from downtown to keep the Tritons in front in the early going. CSUN trailed 18-15 with 12:25 left in the first half before putting together a 9-1 run, capped by a three from Hunt. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones slowed the run for a moment with a basket, but CSUN scored the next seven with a Jones dunk closing the run for a 31-21 Matador lead. The Tritons would counter with a 7-0 run as a Bryce Pope three cut the deficit to three. Pope eventually evened the game at 33-33 on another three with 1:51 on the clock, but Jasman Sangha claimed the final field goal of the half for a CSUN 35-33 lead.
Out of intermission, Jones scored in the paint and Dionte Bostick followed with a three to extend the lead to 40-33. Bostick also scored on a jumper in the lane that gave CSUN a 44-34 advantage with 16:56 left to play. The game though would turn around when the Tritons caught fire from the field as a six-minute stretch saw UCSD go on a 15-2 run. McGhie hit two more threes during that stretch while Pope gave UCSD a 51-48 lead. Sangha gave CSUN a much-needed basket with 9:50 left to play, but Pope scored the next seven points to push the lead to 58-50. The Tritons built as big a lead as 12 on a Tait-Jones dunk before CSUN made one last push in the closing seconds. An Allen-Eikens dunk as well as a Jones basket soon brought CSUN to within 70-63 with under a minute to play. However, UCSD made nine free throws in the final 50 seconds to seal the win.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH ANDY NEWMAN
"Tough game. We were right there, but just didn't defend well enough down the stretch."
