#23 CSUN Falls at #15 UCSD in Big West Opener

LA JOLLA, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo dropped its Big West opener at No. 15 UC San Diego 16-7 on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatics Center. The trio of Dorottya Telek, Helena Sandhagen and Shelby Hovanesian had two goals apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Caroline Christl opened up the scoring for the Tritons on a penalty goal, but Anna Pal answered for CSUN to even the match at 1-1. Annika Arroyo and Christl connected for back-to-back UCSD goals before Telek struck the netting, pulling the Matadors to within one. The Tritons though continued to find success on the offensive end with two more tallies. CSUN got a goal back via a penalty goal from Telek to pull to within 5-3 after eight minutes.
The second period though belonged to the Tritons. Lucia Doak scored on a power play to start then Christl and Kendall Thomas followed with goals to extend the lead to 8-3. Hovanesian's goal at the 3:11 mark of the second period would be the lone tally for CSUN in the quarter as UC San Diego added two goals from Cascade Stensland to lead 10-4 at the break.
The lead swelled to 12-4 in the third period before Hovanesian and Sandhagen each hit the net on power plays. In the fourth quarter though CSUN never got closer. The Tritons hit the net four more times with Hovanesian providing the only CSUN goal with 5:08 on the clock. Stensland closed the scoring for the match with a goal on a 6-on-5 advantage.

- CSUN slips to 14-5 overall and 0-1 in Big West play while UC San Diego improves to 10-8 overall and 1-0 in conference.
- Pal had three assists to lead CSUN while Telek added two steals and one assists to go with her two goals.
- Telek now has a team-high 64 goals on the season.
- Meghan Lopez and Samantha Bright had four saves each in front of the cage.
