Alonso Pitches One-Hitter in 5-1 CSUN Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Isabella Alonso threw a complete-game one-hitter against the Saint Mary's Gaels on Thursday afternoon at Matador Diamond. She also retired 16 batters in a row as the Matadors earned their 15th win by the score of 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors started strong as Kylie Galindo launched the ball into center field to bring in Alexis Chavez at the bottom of the first. The Gaels returned the favor at the top of the second inning with a timely double to even the score. It would be the first and last hit for the Gaels as Alonso dominated the circle. The same wouldn't be true for the Matadors, as CSUN took the lead back in the bottom of the second. Shaylan Whatman fired the ball into center field to bring in Makenzie San Pedro and Sydney Freijanes. Both defenses held strong as there was no scoring in the third and fourth innings, but the Matadors broke through against the Gaels at the bottom of the fifth. Alexis Chavez sent the ball flying into right center for a two-run single as Whatman and Kennedy Gustin topped off the Matadors at five. The final two innings were smooth sailing for CSUN as Alonso allowed just one runner to reach.

CSUN's overall record improved to 15-4. Saint Mary's drops to 11-7.

Isabella Alonso pitched a complete game, her fourth of the season. She got two strikeouts and allowed one hit with one run.

Shaylan Whatman and Alexis Chavez led the Matadors with two RBIs, two hits, and one run each.

UP NEXT
The Matadors hit the road for the Fresno State Bulldog Classic in Margie Wright Diamond. They begin play on Friday, Mar. 8, against San Diego and Fresno State at 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively. The second game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
