CSUN Drops High-Scoring Battle at UCSB in Season Finale

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—CSUN softball fell to UC Santa Barbara 12-8 on Saturday afternoon. CSUN traded blows with the Gauchos as seven Matadors brought in runs and 10 tallied at least one hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors were the first on the board as Kylie Galindo hit a grounder to second base in the first inning to bring in Shaylan Whatman. The Gauchos responded quickly in the bottom of the first as Waddell doubled into right center to bring in a runner. UC Santa Barbara kept the runs coming off another double to bring in two runs and increase its lead to 3-1. The Matadors fired back just as quickly as Lulu Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Sydney Freijanes. Vinessa Nunez tied the game at 3-3 as she capitalized on a wild pitch.
Isabella Alonso kept the Gauchos silent through the rest of the second inning, but UCSB broke through in the bottom of the third. Donaldson began the rally with a triple to bring in a run for the Gauchos. Waddell followed with a double to bring in Donaldson. Sams continued the strike with a single to bring in Waddell. A throwing error allowed another run to score then Fuentes struck next with a double to bring in Sams. McNally rounded off the third inning with a single to bring in Newsom and raise UCSB's lead to 9-3. Lauryn Carranco shut down their rally by retiring the final two batters in a row.
The Matadors answered quickly in the top of the fourth inning as Nunez hit a single down the third base line to bring in Kaylee Escutia. Nunez scored herself off a fielder's choice. Mackenzie San Pedro followed with a single into center field to bring in Alexis Chavez. Jerzie Liana rounded off the rally with a single up the middle to bring in Reagan Jackson and Mikayla Carman. With the final hit of the inning, the Matadors made it a one-run game at 9-8. UC Santa Barbara fired back in the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run sent flying into right center. The Gauchos cracked open the game in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs to increase their lead to 12-8. The Matadors tried to answer as Gizella Vargas Sandoval hit a single into right center, but the Gauchos closed the game with a double play.
NOTES OF THE GAME

CSUN finishes the regular season at 25-26 with a 9-18 conference record. UC Santa Barbara's overall record improved to 20-28 and its Big West record climbed to 14-13.

Isabella Alonso started in the circle and pitched for 2.0 innings. She tallied one strikeout and allowed five hits with seven runs.
