HONOLULU---CSUN Baseball fell for the second-straight night at Hawai'i as the Matadors lost 5-0 on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium. Ryan Halamicek pitched into the seventh inning, striking out four batters. The Matadors were held to three hits on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rainbow Warriors jumped ahead in the first inning against Halamicek. Three consecutive hits to start the game, produced the game's first run as Austin Machado hit an RBI double. Dallas Duarte made it a 2-0 game two batters later on an RBI groundout.
After a rocky start, Halamicek would blank Hawai'i over the next two frames. Halamicek struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 third inning, however, Hawai'i got back into the scoring column in the fourth. With runners at first and third in the bottom of the fourth, Ben Ziegler-Namoa bounced into a double play for a 3-0 Hawai'i lead.
Halamicek would retire the side in order in the fifth inning then induce a 6-4-3 double play in a scoreless sixth.
On the flip side, the Matador offense was shut down by starting pitcher Randy Abshier. The left hander walked the second batter of the game in Jakob Simons but retired the next nine batters in a row. Abshier no-hit CSUN for 4.2 innings before Mason Le collected CSUN's first hit with a single.
CSUN threatened for the first time in the top of the sixth when Conner Stewart reached on an error and Simons walked with one out. Abshier though squashed that rally by retiring Kevin Fitzer and Jarren Sanderson in succession.
The Bows broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Hawai'i knocked Halamicek out of the game after two of the first three batters reached base. Elijah Ickes came through with an RBI single before Hawai'i scored another on a bases loaded walk later in the frame.
Shunsuke Sakaino collected CSUN's second hit of the game in the eighth as the Matadors got the first two batters to reach in the inning. However, a 4-6-3 double play would stop the Matador rally.
In the ninth, CSUN managed to get the tying run to the on deck circle. Fitzer led off with a single before pinch hitters Bren Wilkinson and Roberto Gonzalez walked and were hit by a pitch, respectively. However, Sakaino flied out to left to end the game.
