NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer's Jordyn Canister collected Big West Freshman of the Week honors on Monday, the league office announced. This past week, Canister came off the bench twice and scored her first career goal and game winner in helping CSUN split two matches.
Canister, a redshirt freshman, helped the Matadors pick up their first win of the season last Sunday in a 2-1 decision against LMU at Matador Soccer Field. With the Matadors holding a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, Canister doubled the lead as she collected a long pass from Ashly Torres from near the midfield mark and finished at the net near the left far post. The goal would prove to be the difference in the match after LMU cut the lead in half in the 84th minute. Canister finished with a team-high four shots, three of which on goal in 39 minutes of action. CSUN snapped a three-match losing streak to LMU and earned its first win over the Lions since 2013.
She would tally three more shot attempts with one on goal in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Idaho last Thursday at Matador Soccer Field.
Originally from Torrance, Canister has made her debut on the field this season after redshirting last year with injury. Canister started the first two matches of the season before coming off the bench over the past two matches. She leads the Matadors with eight shots and four shots on goal through four matches on the season.
Canister is the first-ever CSUN Women's Soccer student-athlete to win the Big West Freshman of the Week award.
CSUN opens a three-match road trip this Thursday when it visits Denver at 6 p.m. PT.
