NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball could not hold off a ninth-inning rally from Santa Clara in a 5-4 loss on opening day on Friday at Schott Stadium. Sophomore Ryan Halamicek tossed five shutout innings but earned a no decision. Cameron Calvillo belted a two-run homer while Michael Pena doubled in a run on the night. CSUN held a 4-0 lead as late as the sixth inning before the Broncos roared back behind four runs in the ninth for a walk-off victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors picked up a strong start from Halamicek who earned the opening night start. The right hander pitched around a bases loaded situation in the first inning before tossing a pair of 1-2-3 frames in the second and third. Halamicek would not give up a hit until the fourth when Johnny Luetzo picked up a two-out single but would retire the next batter moments later. In the bottom of the fifth, Halamicek pitched around a one-out error to blank the Broncos once more.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when a Colton Boardman leadoff single led to a Pena one-out RBI double. An inning later, CSUN doubled its lead with the Matadors taking advantage of a Bronco error. After Matthew Kurata singled to open the fifth, Roberto Gonzalez reached with one out on an error by pitcher Victor Martinez. With runners at the corners, Kyle Panganiban laid down a safety squeeze to plate Kurata and give CSUN a 2-0 lead.
Calvillo added to the Matador lead in the top of the sixth with one swing of the bat. Pena set the table with a one-out walk before Calvillo unloaded on two-run homer to left for a 4-0 lead.
Santa Clara would finally break through in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single from Malcolm Williams off the Matador bullpen. However, Gabriel Hernandez, who took over for Halamicek in the sixth, tossed a shutout seventh while Logan Miller worked a scoreless eighth to help CSUN take a 4-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth.
Held at bay most of the night, Santa Clara took advantage of three hit batters, two walks and a CSUN error to rally for four runs. Despite the free passes, CSUN was a strike away from a victory as it led 4-3 with the bases loaded and two outs. Luetzow though drew a walk to force in the tying run then Williams rifled a game-winning RBI single to right.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"It's not how you want to start the season. If baseball was played with eight innings, we may feel different tonight, but it's not. We gave up a three-run lead in the ninth inning and all the opponent had to do was get one hit. We clearly gave them the final outcome and that's what hurts the most."
