Scotty Washington Picks Up Big West Player of the Week Nod

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball's Scotty Washington received his first career Big West Player of the Week award on Monday, as announced by the league office. Washington led the Matadors in scoring over two Matador wins this past week, averaging 18.0 points to go with 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists.
A junior from Del Amo, Calif., Washington has been on a tear offensively for CSUN in recent games, improving his scoring average to 14.6 points on the season. His season point average is second best on the team while he leads the Matadors at 17.3 points per game during Big West play. Over the past five games, Washington has been especially impressive by averaging 19.2 points on 50.0 percent shooting overall and 44.4 percent shooting from three (12-for-27).

Last Thursday, Washington led the Matadors to a 78-71 victory at UC Santa Barbara with a 21-point performance, his fifth 20-point game of the season. Washington made 7-of-14 from the floor against the Gauchos while going 4-of-6 from three-point range. He also converted on 3-of-4 free throws and pulled down four rebounds. After going 5-of-6 from the floor in the first half, Washington scored nine of his 21 points in the second period to help CSUN pull out a close decision at UCSB. He would make two free throws in the final minute to contribute to a CSUN 9-0 run to end the game.
Washington followed up his big performance at UCSB with another strong offensive showing against Cal State Bakersfield last Saturday at Premier America Credit Union Arena. He hit 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc as well as 4-of-4 at the free throw line in a 15-point effort to help beat the 'Runners 88-62. He would also add three rebounds, two assists and one steal in 30 minutes of action.
On the season, Washington is ranked 10th in the Big West in scoring while he is fourth in free throw percentage (85.5) and 12th in three-point made field goals per game (1.8). He is also averaging 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game in 22 total starts.
Washington is the second Matador to earn Big West Player of the Week honors this season. He joins Marcus Adams Jr. who picked up the weekly conference honor on Jan. 6.
CSUN (15-7, 7-4 Big West) continues Big West play this week with a home meeting against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
