CSUN Suffers Defeat at #16 Oklahoma
3/1/2025 10:04:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball fell for the second straight day at No. 16 Oklahoma, dropping a 10-2 decision on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Cameron Calvillo and Andrew Becker had multi-hit games on the day, finishing with two hits each while Elijah Fairchild and Roberto Gonzalez drove in runs. The Matadors totaled 10 hits in the contest but could not cash in on scoring opportunities, leaving 14 total on base.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors had runners on base seemingly all afternoon on Saturday as they were retired in order just once. In the first, Gonzalez hit a leadoff double but was stranded at third base. Oklahoma would cash in on its first scoring chance in the bottom of the first when Jaxon Willits collected an RBI single.
CSUN appeared as though it would respond quickly in the top of the second when Matthew Pena walked, Becker singled and Tyler Mejia reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. However, OU's Malachi Witherspoon bounced back to strike out the next two batters before retiring Gonzalez on a force out to end the frame.
From there, Oklahoma added a single tally in the bottom of the second on a Dawson Willis RBI single. Dayton Tockey gave Oklahoma a 3-0 lead in the third with a two-out single of his own. CSUN's starter Noah Rinehart would limit the damage in both of those innings, stranding three total base runners.
The Matadors finally broke through in the fourth inning behind three hits. After a Mejia single and a throwing error, Fairchild picked up an RBI single with one out to trim the lead to 3-1. Two batters later, Kyle Panganiban reached on an infield single to load the bases, but Witherspoon wiggled out of danger by retiring Colton Boardman for the third out.
The high-powered Sooner offense would break the game open in the middle innings, scoring two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. Easton Carmichael picked up a timely two-out, two run single in the fourth while Tockey added another RBI in the fifth. The Sooners pushed across three more runs in the seventh to take a 10-1 lead after two more run scoring hits with two outs off the bats of Willis and Jason Walk.
CSUN got a run back in the eighth when Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk to score Pena. However, the Matadors settled for just the one run after Panganiban flied out. The ninth inning saw the Matadors leave runners at the corners as well.
