HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would have to play from behind in the early going as Hawai'i jumped ahead in the top of the first on a one-out RBI single from Matthew Miura. Gutierrez though limited the damage by retiring the final two batters of the inning to keep the score at 1-0.
The Matadors managed a pair of walks through the first two innings but broke through in the bottom of the third. Will Linberg drew a leadoff walk then swiped second base later in the frame, setting the table for Calvillo to collect a hit through the right side. With runners at the corners, Roberto Gonzalez successfully laid down a squeeze bunt, bringing in the tying run. CSUN though settled for the one run as a double play on a fly ball to center field and a throw out at home ended the rally.
The Hawai'i bats were kept at bay by Gutierrez for four consecutive innings as the Matador right hander stranded four base runners over that span. The Rainbow Warriors picked up a leadoff double in the fifth from Kedren Kinzie, but Gutierrez retired the next three batters including receiving a throw out at home on a grounder to second baseman Kyle Panganiban.
CSUN would capitalize on a couple of free passes to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. After Linberg walked, Trent Abel reached on a throwing error from pitcher Liam O'Brien. Linberg would score on the errant throw while Abel reached third base. A wild pitch brought in Abel later in the inning, putting CSUN ahead 3-1. The Matadors later picked up hits from Gonzalez and Panganiban, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the inning.
Pitching with the lead, Gutierrez would run into trouble in the sixth as Hawai'i battled back for two runs. Pinch hitter Aidan Kuni delivered the big blow, a two-out RBI double that squared the game at 3-3.
A crucial CSUN error would open the door for Hawai'i to re-take the lead in the seventh. Two walks along with an error at second base on a potential inning-ending double play, loaded the bases with one out. Noah Rinehart entered the game in relief and struck out Itsuki Takemoto for the second out, but Kamana Nahaku came through with a grand slam to left field to put Hawai'i ahead at 7-3.
The Matadors looked to respond quickly in the home half of the seventh, loading the bases with one out after an Abel single, a Calvillo double and a Gonzalez walk. Hawai'i though went to the bullpen and closer Isaiah Magdaleno retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Two more runs would come in for Hawai'i in the ninth, courtesy of Miura, who belted a two-run home run that put the game out of reach.
