CSUN Drops Midweek Battle with #7 UCLA
4/1/2025 7:23:00 PM | Softball
WESTWOOD, Calif --- CSUN Softball fell to the 7th-ranked UCLA Bruins, 10-2 in five innings Tuesday night at Easton Stadium. Tiara Westbrook drove in the two runs for CSUN via a home run in the fourth inning. Rhea Furtado had two hits as well.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCLA scored a run in the bottom of the first on the heels of a walk, a single, and a double to drive the lead runner home. It would be a 1-0 UCLA lead through the end of one.
Â
In the second inning the Bruins added two more runs. UCLA led off with a walk and then a pinch runner stole second. Jessica Clements then singled to centerfield to bring the first runner home. The next batter, Savannah Pola, doubled to left center to score Clements, making it 3-0 Bruins lead. Isabella Alonso relieved Lauryn Carranco for CSUN in the third.
Â
Flash forward to the top of the fourth, it was a familiar friend getting it done for the Matadors. Furtado started the inning with a single to right field. Westbrook came to the plate and the transfer from Oregon State delivered. She put power into a swing that sent the ball over the right field fence cutting the Bruin lead to 3-2. It was Westbrook's fourth home run of the season, which leads the team.
Â
In the fifth inning the Bruins threatened with the bases loaded. Aleyna Urbina came into the game to try and stop the rally. Unfortunately the Bruins scored their fourth run on a fielder's choice. UCLA would get its second run of the inning on a bases loaded walk to make it 5-2. The next batter, Jayla Castro singled in two more to make it 7-2. Two batters later, Clements singled in another to make it 8-2. Pola would end the game on a double to score two more, as the Bruins won via the run rule.

NEWS AND NOTES
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"I mean, hats off, UCLA is a great team. We have to be better pitching-wise and defensively. I thought on the offensive side we started making great adjustments. Rhea had a great game, Tiara came through with the home run as well. Tough loss, but the reason we play these teams is to learn. At the end of the day, we've got to be better. Now we just have to make our adjustments and get ready for UC Davis this weekend."

UP NEXT
CSUN heads back home to continue Big West play as the Matadors will face UC Davis for a three-game series at Matador Diamond. First pitch of the double header will be on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
