DAVIS, Calif.---CSUN Baseball capped off the 2025 season on the short end of a 10-5 decision to UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. Senior Roberto Gonzalez concluded his Matador career with three hits and an RBI while sophomore Trent Abel posted two hits and two RBI. Kyle Panganiban ended the campaign with a team-high 63 hits, the most by a Matador freshman since 1997.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would jump in front in the top of the first behind a two-out double from senior Andrew Gauna that scored Panganiban from first base. However, Gauna attempted to stretch the double to a triple and was thrown out.
Diego Gutierrez did his best to protect the slim lead in the early going. The Aggies threatened with two base runners in the first inning before the Matadors picked up an 8-6-4 double play with Gonzalez starting the double play. CSUN would turn a traditional double play an inning later to keep the score at 1-0.
In the third though, the Aggies turned the game around with a big six-run outburst. The first seven batters reached to start the inning with Jaxon Murphy and Nick Leehey each collecting two-run singles. An Alex Gouveia sacrifice fly added to the lead while Ethan Felix capped a six-run inning with a two-out RBI single.
Trailing 6-1, the Matadors chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth. Two of the first three Matadors reached to start the inning before senior Jesus Liera notched his first career Division I hit to load the bases. Gonzalez followed with a single to center field, bringing home Abel. The Matadors then pulled to within 6-3 on a Panganiban sacrifice fly.
CSUN received two shutout frames from freshman Jackson Banuelos while senior Dante Zamudio worked 1.2 shutout innings, keeping the Aggies off the scoreboard over three innings.
UC Davis though broke through once more in the seventh inning on just one hit. A walk followed by two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly produced a run while Felix had a two-out RBI double to make it 8-3.
The eighth inning would see each side notch two runs. In the top half, CSUN would load the bases with nobody out behind hits from Gonzalez and Panganiban along with an Andrew Becker walk. Abel picked up a two-out double to drive in two to pull the Matadors to within 8-5. The Aggies would respond with a three-hit inning in the home half with Jason Hanson hitting a sac fly and Riley Acosta notching an RBI single.
In the ninth, the Matadors forged one last rally trailing by five runs. Once again, CSUN loaded the bases with none out following singles from Angel Cortez and Xavier Rios and a walk from Gonzalez. Panganiban then cut the lead to 10-6 on a fielder's choice. However, the Matadors settled for just the one run as the next two batters were retired to end the game.
