CSUN Collects First Win of the Season at San José State, 1-0
8/17/2025 2:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN JOSE, Calif.---Sophomore Jordyn Canister's eighth minute goal held up as CSUN Women's Soccer recorded its first win of the year in a 1-0 triumph at San José State on Sunday at Spartan Soccer Complex. Canister's goal was her first of the season while the Matadors tallied their first shutout of 2025.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors were aggressive at the start, leading to a pair of offside calls along with a corner kick over the first five minutes of action. Shortly after a CSUN goal kick, the Matadors would create a scoring chance on precise passing near midfield. A header from Kayden Perigo up the middle of the field found Cailey Jackson who then passed ahead to Canister at the top of the box. Canister dribbled ahead of the defense and finished with shot that curled inside the far post for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of play.
With an early lead, CSUN continued to pressure the San José State defense with Jackson nearly doubling the lead in the 17th minute and Yasmin Azar putting up a pair of shots of her own. On the defensive side, Riley Liebsack recorded her first save in the 26th minute while she stopped another in the 34th minute of action. The Spartans' Kiara Anima provided the team's last look of the first half with two minutes remaining, but Liebsack was there again for another save.
CSUN held a slim 6-4 edge in shots in the first half, but that margin widened in the second half to 8-1. The Spartans would earn three corner kicks in the first 12-plus minutes of the second period as CSUN withstood each set piece. The Matador defense also blocked away the Spartans' lone shot of the second period in that early portion of the half. On the flip side, CSUN would nearly double its lead on multiple occasions with Perigo and Canister each putting a shot on frame. Jackson gave the Spartan defense fits with a series of run outs that led to shot attempts that were just thwarted. The Matadors would control possession in the final minutes of action, earning three corner kicks en route to the 1-0 victory.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We had opportunities to score a couple more goals, so that would have helped it be a more composed game, but we are happy with the team's work ethic and mentality to start the season with a win and a draw away from home."
