SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (7-8-2, 1-4-1 Big West) fell in the season finale to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 3-2, on Halloween night at Harder Stadium. Kayvon Monfared and Dave-Ryan Tankou tallied goals for the Matadors in the defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCSB had a shot on goal in the first 30 seconds as the Gauchos were trying to set the tone. After three more shots by UCSB, Adrian Jones got the first shot for CSUN in the 15th minute but was off-target.Â
In the 19th minute, UCSB struck first. Kaden Standish hit a cross from the left side of the field into the attacking area of Kalle Rahbek. Rahbek slotted it into the center of the box right into the foot of Steinar Bjornsson. Bjornsson kicked it past the diving Bryan Castaneda to make it aa 1-0 game.Â
In the next minute, two more shots were saved by Castaneda as the senior goalkeeper held ground.
In the 27th minute, the Gauchos added to their lead via a penalty kick. Francisco Garibay was called for the shove on Standish. Standish, the second leading goal scorer on the year, struck the ball on the penalty kick to the upper left side of the goal to make it 2-0.
Damien Baltierra and Garibay had two shots on goal in the 37th minute but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
UCSB would carry that two goal lead into the intermission.Â
In the second half, six minutes after the break, UCSB added a third goal. Standish from inside the box, fed Rahbeck who was just outside the top of the box as Rahbeck rifled a ball past the diving Castaneda on the left side for a 3-0 lead.Â
Despite being down 3-0, CSUN refused to roll over. A little over three minutes after the third goal, CSUN's best scorer throughout the season punched back. Monfared scored his ninth goal of the season. Tankou had a chance in the box that was kicked back out by the defense. Monfared was the trailing runner that got the rebound on the right side of the box. He rocketed a ball to the right side to make it 3-1.Â
Six minutes later, CSUN added another. Daniel Garcia fed Dominick Wicks who floated a ball past the defense into the space of Tankou who lobbed a ball over the goalkeeper and into the net to make it 3-2. The goal put CSUN within striking distance after falling down three goals to start the game.Â
The defense for the rest of the match was turned up as the Gauchos did their best to keep the ball away from the CSUN attack.Â
The best chance for the Matadors came just two minutes before the game ended. Messiah Antwi kicked a deep ball from almost midfield into the box and right into the feet of Enrique Pineda. Pineda shot the ball on target, but it was saved by Owen Beninga. UCSB survived the pressure and held on to its one goal lead for the win.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"UCSB came out really well. At first, we didn't match their intensity. In the second half, we fought back. I am proud of the way we came back against a quality opponent."
On the season overall
"This season we could have started games a little bit stronger and been more disciplined with our red cards. The season could have been a little bit different. We're improving though, and we're looking forward to next year. From this season to last, our players just got better. We improved, and we're happy with our team's offense. Obviously, you need players who can score goals, and we have to put them in the right positions to do that. But even if you put them in the right positions, if they're not talented, then they're not going to score. We have got a good group of players that will continue to improve."
