CSUN Sweeps Big West Weekly Women's Soccer Awards

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---The CSUN Women's Soccer swept the Big West's weekly honors on Monday, as announced by the conference office. Junior Yasmin Azar took home Offensive Player of the Week accolades while junior Siena Navarra was named Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Theresa Castro earned Rookie of the Week honors.
CSUN went unbeaten across two matches in the state of Utah last week, earning a 4-2 victory over Utah Tech on Thurday and a 2-2 draw with Southern Utah on Sunday.Â
A Folsom native, Azar had a career week in the Matadors' road trip in Utah, posting three goals while posting nine shots with seven on goal. In Thursday's victory against Utah Tech, Azar recorded a first career brace, scoring twice in the first 22 minutes of the match to put CSUN in front. The Matadors would not relinquish their lead in the eventual victory. Her brace was the first by a Matador since Izabel Reyes accomplished the feat in 2023. On Sunday, Azar followed up her big performance with a timely second-half equalizer at Southern Utah as the Matadors went on to play to a draw. With her performance this past week, Azar leads CSUN with three goals, eight points and 17 shots.Â
Navarra would be a prominent force on the defensive side of the field for CSUN last week. The San Diego native played in all 180 minutes across the two matches at Utah Tech and Southern Utah and she especially came up big in helping CSUN earn the draw with the Thunderbirds. Her assist to Azar in the second half brought CSUN level with Southern Utah while on the defensive side, she made a game-saving save by turning away a shot at the goal line with less than six minutes to go. On the season, Navarra has tallied three points to go with the fourth-most minutes played on the team at 717.Â
Originally from Bonita, Calif., Castro gave CSUN a lift off the bench, posting a goal with four shots over the two matches last week. Castro quickly made an impact in her first stint on the field against Southern Utah, hitting an equalizer in the first half. The strike was the first collegiate goal for the true freshman. She finished with two shots against the Trailblazers in 62 minutes of action. Thus far this season, Castro is fourth on the team in shots with 11 to go with her goal.Â
Monday marks the first time the CSUN Women's Soccer team has won all three Big West awards in the same week since the conference began honoring three players in 2021. Azar, Navarra and Castro also received their respective first career Big West awards.Â
CSUN will return to the field in nine days on Sep. 23 for the start of Big West play. The Matadors host UC San Diego in the conference opener with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
