CSUN's Comeback Comes up Short in Five-Set Loss to Drake

MANHATTAN, Kan. - CSUN rallied from a two-set deficit Saturday before Drake pulled away in the fifth set, as the Matadors fell 27-25, 25-23, 18-25, 18-25, 15-5 to close the Wildcat Classic at Morgan Family Arena.
The Matadors dropped to 1-4 on the season, while Drake improved to 2-2.
Senior Hailey Brockway led CSUN with 18 kills (.197), 12 digs and two service aces, her fourth double in five matches this season. Freshman Annie Gilmore added a season-high 11 kills on .306 hitting with eight digs and seven block assists, while senior Julia Bazylevych finished with eight kills (.069) and matched her career-high with 13 digs. Senior middle Tatiana Turgeon had seven kills (.235), one ace, two solo blocks and seven block assists, while fellow middle Iye Okolo chipped in nine block assists.
CSUN totaled 18.0 team blocks and held Drake to a .147 hitting percentage, but the Bulldogs finished with 65 kills and used a fast start in the deciding set to close out the match.
Senior Katie Kolar recorded 34 assists, nine digs and three block assists for the Matadors. Senior libero Paige Sentes had a team-high 23 digs, four assists, and two aces, while Jan Marie Duhaylungsod added seven assists and six digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After dropping the first two sets by deuce margins, CSUN responded in the third. The Matadors held Drake to a negative hitting percentage in the frame and used kills from Brockway, Gilmore, Bazylevych and Turgeon to take a 25-18 win.
CSUN forced a fifth set with another 25-18 victory in the fourth. Brockway and Gilmore each put down five kills in the set, and the Matadors hit .244 while limiting Drake to an .023 team hitting clip.
Drake took control early in the fifth, scoring the first six points and hitting .588 in the frame.
Lisa Melenciano led Drake with 27 kills and nine block assists. Matthea Dalton added 11 kills, 14 digs and three aces for the Bulldogs.
UP NEXT
CSUN returns home to host the Linda Murphy Ridge Invitational (Sept. 11-13). The Matadors will take on UNLV in their home opener, before meeting San Francisco and Fresno State over the three-day event.
