Andy Newman
- Title:
- Head Coach
Andy Newman enters his fourth season as head men's basketball coach with CSUN in 2026-27. Newman is the eighth head coach in the history of the Matadors.

Newman has transformed the Matadors into a winning program, helping CSUN achieve numerous records in his first three seasons on the bench. CSUN has won 61 games over the past three seasons, the most over a three-year stretch in the team's Division I history, while the Matadors have won at least 20 games in each of the past two seasons for the first time since 1999-01. A total of nine Matadors have earned All-Big West honors in Newman's tenure with three collecting First-Team accolades.
Newman's Matadors have become one of the top rebounding teams in the nation over his three seasons. In addition to leading the Big West in all three seasons in the category, CSUN has finished in the top-20 in the nation in rebounds per game, highlighted by finishing seventh overall at 41.4 in 2025-26. The team would also rank ninth in the nation in rebounding margin (+8.4) in 2024-25, setting a new school record for a season.Â
Newman would lead a new-look CSUN team to a 20-14 overall record in the 2025-26 season, which featured the Matadors' first Big West tournament semifinal appearance in 12 seasons. With only three returning rotation players from the year before, Newman led CSUN to a third-place finish in the Big West for the second straight season. CSUN would also tie a school record with seven consecutive victories during the league season.Â
The 2025-26 season also included four All-Big West honorees for the Matadors, the most for the program in 18 seasons. Josiah Davis would lead the way in awards, taking home Big West Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and All-Big West First Team honors. Davis along with leading scorer Larry Hughes II also would receive NABC Pacific All-District Second Team accolades following the year.Â
In 2024-25, Newman led CSUN to an impressive 22-11 record, tying the school record for overall wins while the Matadors established a new record for conference wins (14), tied the school mark for road wins (10) and matched the D-1 record for wins in a row (7). The 22 wins were the most for the program since the 2000-01 season and marked just the fourth time CSUN had reached 20 wins as a Division I program. CSUN also made school history by competing in the National Invitation Tournament for the first time.
In his first season at CSUN, Newman became the winningest first-year head coach in team history by leading the Matadors to a 19-15 overall record. The winning season was the Matadors' first in 15 years. Newman coached CSUN to one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation, a 12-game improvement over the season before. Among the team's memorable victories was a historic 76-72 win over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, securing the program's first win over the Bruins in 23 years. CSUN also won its first Big West tournament game in 10 seasons by knocking off defending conference champion UC Santa Barbara.
In 2023-24, the Matadors set a school record with 960 defensive rebounds while breaking the program Division I record for total rebounds with 1,362. CSUN also played at an uptempo pace resulting in producing 14.8 fastbreak points per game, good enough for 10th best in the nation while the Matadors posted the second-most made field goals (940) and the fourth-most points (2,551) in team history.Â
Newman previously led Cal State San Bernardino to the program's most successful run in team history, culminating in a NCAA Division II West Region Championship and a National Semi-Final finish. He earned an impressive 206-98 head coaching record in his five seasons with the Yotes. Newman was recognized as CCAA Coach of the Year twice and the NABC West Region Coach of the Year in 2022.Â
Newman had four consecutive winning campaigns with CSUSB, highlighted by three NCAA Tournament berths, after inheriting a program that had four-straight losing seasons prior to his arrival. Newman registered an impressive 91-30 overall record and 63-21 conference record. He also coached CSUSB to back-to-back CCAA regular season titles and a 55-8 record over his last two seasons. Known for his high-octane offenses, Newman's Yotes won a program record 31 games in 2022-23 while amassing a school record for points in a season, 3,094. The 2023 NCAA Final Four run was the school's first in 16 seasons. Â
Â
Before his time at CSUSB, he served as the Head Coach of the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) from 2013-18 and led the Falcons to the greatest run in its men's basketball history. In 2017, UTPB won its first ever Lone Star regular season and tournament championships. In recognition of the historic achievement, Newman was named the Lone Star Conference Coach of Year. Over his five seasons, Newman guided the team to five consecutive winning seasons and a 101-50 overall record. The Falcons earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament, capped by a Sweet 16 trip in 2018. Â
Â
Newman is well known within The Big West, having been the lead assistant at Cal State Fullerton for 10 seasons from 2003-13. Newman served as the Associate Head Coach in 2007-08 during Fullerton's first and only Big West regular season championship since 1976. The team went on to win the Big West Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978. Serving as the interim Head Coach in 2012-13, the Titans were the top scoring team in the Big West.
Â
Prior to his time at Fullerton, Newman served as the Director of Basketball Operations for one season at Fresno State where he helped the Bulldogs win the Western Athletic Conference championship. Â
Â
A graduate of Azusa Pacific University, Newman led the team to a 34-5 record and a trip to the NAIA Final Four in 1998. Newman also spent one season at Southern Utah University, leading the team in assists and minutes played. While a member of West Valley College, Newman was a part of a program that went 65-6, won two conference titles and earned two state championship game berths. Â
Newman is married to Kellie Newman (Cox), the 2005 Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year while at Cal State Fullerton. Andy and Kellie have two sons, Luke and Kade.
