Andy Newman enters his third season as head men's basketball coach with CSUN in 2025-26. Newman is the eighth head coach in the history of the Matadors.
Newman has transformed the the Matadors into a winning program, helping CSUN achieve numerous records in his first two seasons at the helm. CSUN has won 41 games over the past two seasons, the most over a two-year stretch in over two decades. A total of five Matadors have earned All-Big West honors in his tenure with two collecting First-Team accolades.

Newman led CSUN to an impressive 22-11 record in 2024-25, tying the school record for overall wins while the Matadors established a new record for conference wins (14), tied the school mark for road wins (10) and matched the D-1 record for wins in a row (7). The 22 wins were the most for the program since the 2000-01 season and marked just the fourth time CSUN had reached 20 wins as a Division I program. CSUN also made school history by competing in the National Invitation Tournament for the first time.
Newman's Matadors led the Big West for the second straight season in rebounding in 2024-25, ranking 12th overall in the nation at 40.6. CSUN also broke the school record for rebounding margin (+8.4), which ranked ninth-best in the nation. The Matadors were also 23rd in the country in defensive field goal percentage (40.4), 26th in turnovers forced per game (14.7) and 30th in assists per game (16.3).
In his first season at CSUN, Newman became the winningest first-year head coach in CSUN history by leading the Matadors to a 19-15 overall record. The winning season was the Matadors' first in 15 seasons and the most overall since 2007-08. Newman coached CSUN to one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation, a 12-game improvement over the season before. Among the team's memorable victories was a historic 76-72 win over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, securing the program's first win over the Bruins in 23 years. CSUN also won its first Big West tournament game in 10 seasons by knocking off defending conference champion UC Santa Barbara in overtime.
In 2023-24, Newman's Matadors set a school record with 960 defensive rebounds while breaking the program Division I record for total rebounds with 1,362. The Matadors' defense would rise to the top of the Big West, ranking first in the conference and 17th in the nation in defensive field goal percentage (40.5). CSUN would also play at an uptempo pace resulting in the Matadors ranking 10th in the nation in fastbreak points (14.8). CSUN finished the year with the second-most made field goals in team history (940) along with the fourth-most points scored (2,551).
Newman joined CSUN after helping lead Cal State San Bernardino to the program's most successful run in its men's basketball history, culminating in a NCAA Division II West Region Championship and a National Semi-Final finish. He would post an impressive 206-98 head coaching record in his five seasons with the Yotes.
Newman had four consecutive winning campaigns with CSUSB, highlighted by three NCAA Tournament berths, after inheriting a program that had four-straight losing seasons prior to his arrival. Newman registered an impressive 91-30 overall record and 63-21 conference record. Â

Newman also coached CSUSB to back-to-back CCAA regular season titles and a 55-8 record over his last two seasons. Known for his high-octane offenses, Newman's Yotes won a program record 31 games in 2022-23 while amassing a school record for points in a season, 3,094. The 2023 NCAA Final Four run was the school's first in 16 seasons. Â

Newman was recognized as the CCAA Coach of the Year twice while he also received NABC West Region Coach of the Year accolades in 2022. His players earned 16 all-conference accolades during his stint at CSUSB, including a first team All American the past two years.Â

Before his time at CSUSB, he serveds as the Head Coach of the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) from 2013-18 and led the Falcons to the greatest run in its men's basketball history. In 2017, UTPB won its first ever Lone Star regular season and tournament championships. In recognition of the historic achievement, Newman was named the Lone Star Conference Coach of Year. Over his five seasons, Newman guided the team to five consecutive winning seasons and a 101-50 overall record. Newman's Falcons earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament,capped by a Sweet 16 trip in 2018. Â

Newman is well known within The Big West, having been the lead assistant at Cal State Fullerton for 10 seasons from 2003-13. Newman served as the Associate Head Coach in 2007-08 during Fullerton's first and only Big West regular season championship since 1976. The team went on to win the Big West Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978. Serving as the interim Head Coach in 2012-13, the Titans were the top scoring offense in the Big West.

Prior to his time at Fullerton, Newman served as the Director of Basketball Operations for one season at Fresno State where he helped the Bulldogs win the Western Athletic Conference championship. Â

A graduate of Azusa Pacific University, Newman led the team to a 34-5 record and a trip to the NAIA Final Four in 1998. Newman also spent one season at Southern Utah University, leading the team in assists and minutes played. While a member of West Valley College, Newman was a part of a program that went 65-6, won two conference titles and earned two state championship game berths. Â
Newman is married to Kellie Newman (Cox), the 2005 Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year while at Cal State Fullerton. Andy and Kellie have two sons, Luke and Kade.
