Terry Johnson enters his second season as an assistant coach to the CSUN Men's Basketball team in 2021-22.
Johnson has coached at multiple levels during his coaching career including the Division I, Division II and NAIA ranks.
In Johnson's first season with the Matadors in 2021-22, he helped coach the team to the No. 8 seed in the Big West Tournament, two spots higher than the team was projected to finish to start the season. Despite dealing with a multitude of injuries, CSUN finished second in the Big West in steals per game (7.2) while guard Atin Wright earned All-Big West Honorable Mention accolades.
Â
Johnson joined the Matadors after a seven-year stint at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from 2014-21. He began his tenure with the men’s basketball program as director of basketball operations before being promoted to assistant coach under head coach Willis Wilson in 2016.
Â
While Johnson was on the staff, the Islanders posted their second-most wins in program history with 25 in the 2015-16 season. Corpus Christi advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament championship game in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017 and would make it to the finals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in 2017.
Â
In addition, Johnson completed a variety of administrative tasks surrounding the Islanders’ program including coordinating team travel, camps, housing, gear and equipment, scouting, recruiting and player development. Johnson also remained on the coaching staff as the director of basketball operations in May 2021 under head coach Steve Lutz.
Â
Prior to his time in Corpus Christi, Johnson spent one season at the University of St. Thomas where he helped lead the program to a 20-win season and a second-place finish in the Red River Athletic Conference. UST also earned a second-straight NAIA National Tournament appearance. Johnson began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Cal State Stanislaus in 2009.
Â
Johnson played high school basketball at Reno High School before playing collegiately at Moorpark Community College and Cal State Stanislaus. He served as a team captain at all three levels during his playing career.
Â
Johnson graduated from Cal State Stanislaus with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2012.
Johnson is the son of Matador head coach Trent Johnson and Jackie Johnson. His sister Tinishia is a former Arizona State Track & Field standout.
