Greg Bergeron will begin his fourth season as an assistant coach on the CSUN staff in 2024.
Â
A 20+ year veteran of the Division I baseball ranks, Bergeron came to Northridge most recently from Washington State where he was the volunteer assistant coach with the Cougars’ baseball program during the 2020 campaign. Working with the hitters, infielders, and as the third base coach, Washington State finished third in the Pac-12 in hits, home runs, and hit-by-pitches, and tied for second in Division I in sacrifice bunts. Off the field, WSU posted a 3.05 GPA, the highest in Washington State history.
Bergeron moved to Pullman after spending four seasons (2015-19) at Long Beach State. At LBSU, Bergeron oversaw the Dirtbags’ offense while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Following the 2017 season, Bergeron became the associate head coach after two seasons as an assistant coach. During his first two years at the Beach, Bergeron helped guide the Dirtbags to highly successful seasons at the plate. Long Beach State scored 310 runs in 2016 and 312 in 2017, resulting in the highest two-year total since 2009-10.
The Dirtbags also hit 60 home runs in Bergeron’s first two seasons, more than the previous five seasons combined (55 home runs). LBSU saw improvements in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and stolen bases during the 2017 season, culminating in a Big West Championship and an NCAA Super Regional appearance.
Before Long Beach State, Bergeron was on the staff of current CSUN head baseball coach Dave Serrano at UC Irvine (2005-07), Cal State Fullerton (2008-11), and Tennessee (2012-15). In Bergeron’s four years at Cal State Fullerton, the Titans made the postseason in all four years while advancing to the Super Regionals three times and making one trip to the College World Series. Under his direction, the Titans offense had one of its most successful seasons in 2010 with a .337 team batting average which ranked 17th in the country and second in CSUF history.
His success in Fullerton was a continuation of the success that he also found at UC Irvine where he also helped the Anteaters to a College World Series appearance for the first time in school history. After starting as a volunteer assistant for the 2005 season, Bergeron began running the offense in 2006 with UCI topping the Big West in nearly every offensive category.
Before UCI, Bergeron spent eight years coaching at the junior college level beginning in 1997 at Cerritos College. He spent the next seven at El Camino College. He was the head coach at El Camino in 2004 after serving as an assistant for the previous six seasons. During his stint at El Camino, 52 players continued their careers at the four-year level as 30 advanced to the Division I level. His coaching career began at Loyola Marymount as a volunteer assistant in 1996.
After prepping at Gahr High School and earning first-team All-Conference honors at Cerritos College, Bergeron played two seasons at Cal State Dominguez Hills where he was named the Toros’ Student-Athlete of the Year and Team MVP. He was the conference batting champion his junior year. Bergeron finished his eligibility in 1994 with Loyola Marymount, where he earned All-West Coast Conference recognition. He eventually signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Astros in 1995.
Â
In his career, Bergeron has worked with over 100 players who have been selected in the MLB Draft, including five first-rounders and 22 who have advanced to the Major Leagues.
Bergeron earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1993 and his master's degree in the same subject from Azusa Pacific in 1997. He and his wife, Anne Marie, have twin daughters, Nicole and Natalie, and a son, Brooks.
