Jeff Thornton
- Induction:
- 1988
- Class:
- 1983
Jeff Thornton was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988. Thornton competed for the CSUN Swim team under legendary coach Pete Accardy. During his collegiate career from 1979 to 1982, Thornton established himself as an elite athletic powerhouse, capturing multiple individual national championships and setting all-time division records.
Thornton was a 13-time NCAA individual champion and set an NCAA record in the 1,650 freestyle. He achieved a rare and historic level of dominance by winning consecutive individual national titles across multiple freestyle distances: 500-yard Freestyle (4-time consecutive NCAA Division II National Champion - 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982), 1,650-Yard Freestyle (4-time consecutive NCAA Division II National Champion in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982), 200-Yard Freestyle (NCAA Division II National Champion - 1979), and swam on four separate NCAA championship-winning relay teams during his time at CSUN.
In 1979, Thornton set the all-time NCAA Division II meet record in the 1,650-yard freestyle with an incredible time of 15:45.61. His performance cemented CSUN's reputation as a dominant force in collegiate swimming during that golden era of the program. When CSUN discontinued the men's swimming program, Thornton held the school record in the 500 Free (4:29.62).
Following his historic collegiate career, Thornton transitioned into elite swim coaching. He operated out of the West San Fernando Valley as the Owner and Head Coach of CCAT Swimming, a coach-owned, year-round competitive swim club offering instruction for all levels from novices to national competitors. He also regularly stays connected with former teammates through the CSUN Swimming Alumni community.
Thornton earned his bachelor's degree from CSUN in 1983.
