Joey Kirk was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. A four-year letterwinner from 1983 to 1987, Kirk is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the Matadors' men's soccer program.
Playing for Hall of Fame head coach Marwan Ass'ad, Kirk remains the program's all-time leader in career goals (59) and career points (162). Kirk was a first-team All-American in 1987 after scoring a school-record 30 goals. In addition to being named All-American, he was a nominee for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award and was a two-time CCAA Player of the Year (1986 and 1987) and a two-time All-Region honoree (1986 and 1987).
Kirk was a member of 1987 CSUN team that advanced to NCAA Division II National Championship game, where CSUN entered the Final Four ranked No. 1 in the nation with a historically high-powered offense. The Matadors wound up falling to Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), 2-0 in a match that took place at Pepin/Rood Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on December 5, 1987. Despite the final loss, the 1987 season was historic for CSUN, which achieved a school-record 19 wins and made the program's first-ever national championship appearance
After CSUN, Kirk played professionally for 13 years and spent two seasons on the U.S. Men's National Team. recording several appearances (caps) between 1987 and 1988. Â He was selected 9th overall in the 1988 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) draft by the Minnesota Strikers. Years later, he was also picked by the LA Galaxy in the inaugural 1996 MLS draft. In total, Kirk spent 13 highly successful seasons across various professional indoor soccer leagues. He scored 241 career goals, notably starring for teams like the Milwaukee Wave and Detroit Rockers.
