Matadors Drop 79-59 Decision at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-8) lost 79-59 to UTEP Friday night at Memorial Gym. Junior Jasmine Erving scored 22 points and added 11 rebounds while sophomore Janelle Nomura finished with 20 points for CSUN in the loss.

The story of the game was the Miners' proficiency from 3-point range. As a team, UTEP made 11-of-19 3-pointers (57.9 percent). In the opening 20 minutes, the Miners shot a blistering 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from 3-point range. Comparatively, Northridge finished 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from behind the arc for the game, led by Nomura's career-high three 3-pointers.

Erving finished in double-figures for the fourth-straight game, shooting 8-of-18 from the field and 5-of-10 from the free throw line. She also added her first 3-pointer of the season and had two blocks and a steal in 35 minutes of action.

The double-double was the ninth of her career. For the season, Erving is averaging 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds. In addition to the treys, Nonura was 5-of-6 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. She added an assist and a rebound in 36 minutes of action and is now averaging a career-high 10.1 points on the season.

Violet Alama was the third Matador to finish in double-figures, scoring 10 points. She added four rebounds and an assist to her final line and is now averaging a team-high 14.5 points and 6.8 rebounds for the season.

As a team, CSUN shot 37.8 percent (17-of-45) from the field compared to a 43.8 percent rate (28-of-64) for UTEP. The Miners outrebounded the Matadors, 43-34, and their bench outscored Northridge's 30-4. CSUN trailed 40-21 at halftime. Erving had six points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Matadors. Nomura added eight points, including two 3-pointers, for CSUN.

The Matadors remain on the road for their next game, a meeting with the Aggies of New Mexico State on Dec. 5. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. (MT) / Noon (PT). CSUN returns home for a Dec. 8 non-conference contest against Washington. The Matadors and Huskies will play at The Matadome with a start time slated for 7 p.m.
