CSUN Holds UC Davis to Scoreless Draw
10/12/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
"UC Davis doesn't give up many goals, if any. They are a defensive team and a disciplined team," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We need to keep plugging away."
CSUN got off to an early start and registered its first shot on goal just 14 seconds after the opening whistle. Sagi Lev-Ari curled a header toward goal from the middle of the box but it was corralled by UC Davis goalkeeper Kris Schultz. Edwin Rivas had a shot denied by Schultz four minutes later, as did Nicolas Camacho in the 35th minute.
The momentum seemed to shift in CSUN's favor in the 34th minute of action, when the first of two red cards on the night was handed out. UC Davis defender and U.S. U-23 National Team player Ramon Martin del Campo was sent off for a challenge on Lev-Ari, where he appeared to make contact with the side of the CSUN forward's head as they chased a loose ball.
Searching for a goal before halftime, the Matadors were inches from celebrating when Carlos Gonzalez dribbled through the defense and rang the crossbar with a blistering shot from the top of the box. CSUN continued to attack after the break in play, but the tables turned again when Shane Steffes was shown the red card for a sliding tackle in the 60th minute.
The Matadors had a series of would-be goals waved off in the second half for offsides and the teams went into the overtime period without a goal between them.
Miguel Acevedo had the best chance for UC Davis in the first overtime session but his shot 42 seconds in dipped over the bar and out of play. The Matadors countered by feeding the ball to Camacho at the edge of the box, whose shot was knocked away by a defender.
The Matadors took the only shot of the second overtime, a rocket off the foot of Lev-Ari that was steered away by the goalkeeper by the left post.
With the draw, the Matadors pick up their first point of the Big West season going into South Division showdowns that begin next week. CSUN will take a midweek break before welcoming UC Riverside to Matador Soccer Field on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
