NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- For the second time in the last three weeks, CSUN men's soccer senior goalkeeper Adam Hobbs has been named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Matadors' backstop tied a season high with 10 stops in CSUN's 1-1 draw at UC Davis and then added five saves in the Matadors' 2-1 comeback victory at Sacramento State.
Serving as the last line of defense for the Matadors, Hobbs has stood tall for CSUN throughout the season. The 10 stops against UC Davis actually gave him 10 saves for the second-straight match as Hobbs also had 10 in CSUN's match against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 3. Both performances represent a new career best for the El Segundo, CA product.
"I was definitely involved in the UCD game. I was able to catch several saves easily, but the two saves in overtime were in my wheelhouse. I was able to get a good read on both attempts, pushing the first around the post and the second over the bar," Hobbs said. "Against Sacramento State we had a slow start, but we responded straight away after the early goal. Once we got our heads back in it, I thought we were the dominant team and deserved to win."
Two days later, CSUN overcame a Hornet goal 78 seconds into the match to post a 2-1 victory. Hobbs made five saves in the victory, raising his season total to a conference-high 56 for the season. He is also tied for the conference lead with an .800 save percentage.
A large part of Hobbs' success has been the defensive line in front of him. Senior Trevor Morley and junior Patrick Hickman have played every minute of every match this season. Their contributions, plus those of the entire team, have not been lost on Hobbs.
"They never give up on any play. I would have to save two or three times as many shots without Trevor or Pat," Hobbs added. "They block a lot of shots and sacrifice their bodies for the team. We really stress team defense and that means everyone works hard to support each other and that has helped lead to our success."
CSUN has now recorded 29 road or neutral-site victories since the start of the 2010 season, the second-most among Big West clubs. The Matadors have also won 16-straight matches when scoring at least two goals, a streak that dates back to the 2013 season.
Hobbs also won Big West Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28 after making six saves, including a penalty kick save, in the Matadors' 1-0 victory at San Diego. Morley was the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 21 after scoring penalty kick goals in wins at Saint Mary's and Santa Clara.
CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Matador Soccer Field for a 7 p.m. match.
