HONOLULU, HI---
Breanna McCallum's second half goal proved to be the difference in CSUN Women's Soccer's (10-5-1, 3-0-1 Big West) 1-0 victory against Hawai'i (3-11-1, 0-5 Big West) at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening. Cynthia Tafoya posted her fifth shutout of the season and her third against Big West Conference competition in the win.
"The defense was fantastic tonight," said head coach Keith West. "Anytime you have a clean sheet, you will take it. Hawai'i had a great side tonight, but we played very well to earn the victory."
Seeking its third-straight win in Big West play, the Matadors kept the Rainbow Wahine not only off the scoreboard throughout the first half but they would not surrender a shot attempt in the first 45 minutes of action.
On the other side of the field, the Matadors recorded four shot attempts in the first period but were unable to find the net. Lyndsey Preston and Cynthia Sanchez each tallied shot on goals in the half and Kirsten Von Meter fired a shot wide of the net in the 44th minute.
Shortly after halftime, in the 52nd minute, the Matadors moved the ball deep inside the Rainbow Wahine's side of the field creating a scoring opportunity. Von Meter found McCallum who delivered a low shot out of reach of goalkeeper Erica Young that found the corner of the net. On the play, the junior McCallum registered her first goal of the season and her first score since the 2013 season. Also, Von Meter earned her first career assist on the pass to McCallum.
The Matadors looked for more moments later as Preston delivered a pair of shots on goal in the 54th and 56th minutes but Young snared each attempt, keeping her team within a goal.
Hawai'i looked for the equalizer for the remainder of the second half but was unable to breakthrough against the CSUN defense. Tafoya had another strong effort in net for the Matadors on Sunday. The senior saved four in the second half including recording a key stop in the 89th minute off a shot from Kellsie Gleason.
Despite being outshot in the second half, 7-5, the Matadors held Hawai'i off the scoreboard to hold on for the 1-0 win. With no goals allowed in the match, CSUN has held Big West Conference opponents to one goal in 380 minutes of action this season.
The victory gives CSUN its first 10-win season since 2012 and West's fifth double-digit win campaign since taking over head coaching duties in 2006.
With McCallum's score against the Rainbow Wahine, she becomes the 12th different Matador to tally a goal on the year.
CSUN returns back home for a Thursday night match against Long Beach State. Kickoff from Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
