NORTHRIDGE, CA - The visiting Cal Poly Mustangs dealt CSUN its first home loss of the season, sweeping the Matadors 25-22, 25-22, 25-16 Friday night at The Matadome.
In sweeping CSUN for the second time this season, the visitors won despite being out-hit, out-dug and out-blocked. Cal Poly used a 12-2 advantage in aces to improve to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the Big West. The Matadors drop to 4-15 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
"The difference tonight was serve and pass, they served better than we did and they passed better than we did," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "It was a frustrating loss for the entire team tonight."
Freshman Aeryn Owens led the Matadors with 12 kills while hitting .310 on 29 attacks. Owens also tallied a pair of digs and one solo block. Redshirt freshman Nada Dragovic added eight kills and five digs while CSUN's leading hitter, Cieana Stinson added seven kills on .091 hitting. Stinson did add one solo block to her conference-leading total of 19.
As a team, the Matadors hit .263 (40-15-95) to .240 (42-16-104) for Cal Poly and also posted an advantage in blocks (8.0-5.0) and digs (40-37).
Sophomore libero Katie Sato notched a team-high 13 digs but was one of five CSUN passers to surrender at least one ace in the loss.
Kills from Owens and Stephanie Serna Arreola brought the Matadors back from a 23-20 deficit late in the opening set. But the visitors ended the mini CSUN run with a Savannah Niemen kill and following a Matador timeout, cashed in on set point on an Adlee Van Winden kill.
Van Winden's hitting error put CSUN in front 17-15 in the second set but Cal Poly then rallied for five straight points to open up a 21-17 cushion. The Matadors put together a pair of late runs to get within two at 22-20, 23-21 and again at 24-22 but could get no closer falling by the identical 25-22 score.
Looking the stay in the match, the Matadors surrendered another Cal Poly run midway through the frame which proved costly. Trailing by three at 14-11, Cal Poly rolled off four straight points, three of those coming on aces, to open up an 18-11 cushion. The Matadors could not get within six the remainder of the set and fell in three sets.
Van Winden put down a match-high 17 kills to lead Cal Poly.
CSUN wraps up a brief two-match homestand Saturday as the Matadors host UC Santa Barbara on "Dig Pink" night at The Matadome. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
