CSUN Draws at UC Irvine to Earn South's Second Seed

Matadors Host UC Davis on Nov. 7
IRVINE, Calif. -- The CSUN men's soccer team (8-7-3, 4-4-2 Big West) played to a 0-0 draw at UC Irvine Saturday night to earn the second seed in the Big West South Division for the upcoming Big West Tournament. Senior Adam Hobbs made nine saves in net to earn his fifth shutout of the season and the Matadors will host UC Davis on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Matador Soccer Field. A time for the match will be announced shortly.
The Matadors and Anteaters engaged in a physical contest that ended in the third scoreless draw between the two sides since the 2008 season. CSUN totaled a season-high 33 fouls and five Matadors saw the yellow card: Shane Steffes, Tanner Snedigar, Papi Diouf, Jules Cailliau and Patrick Hickman. UC Irvine had 22 fouls, four yellow cards and a red card over the 110 minutes.
That red card set up a keen opportunity for the Matadors to take the full three points, but Trevor Morley's penalty kick at the start of the 90th minute was saved. It was the first time in four attempts that the CSUN captain was stopped from the penalty spot this season.
Still, CSUN emerged with the scoreless draw thanks to work of the team defense and Hobbs. Serving as the last line of defense, Hobbs had four saves in the first half, three in the second and a stop in both overtime periods. UC Irvine finished with 17 shots and five corner kicks compared to nine shots and three for CSUN.
Of those nine shots, CSUN managed to put four on frame in addition to the penalty kick. UC Irvine's Elliott Farmer finished with five saves in the draw and had three stops in the second half during the run of play. Gabe Robinson and Morley both had attempts thwarted in the second half off a corner kick. Stuart Close and Carlos Gonzalez also had shots on goal in the contest.
The Matadors will now host a UC Davis squad it forged a 1-1 draw with earlier in the Big West campaign. Sophomore Jeremy Degraffenreidt scored his first goal as Matador in that result.
Cal State Fullerton posted a 2-0 victory at UC Riverside, giving it the division title. CSUN needed to win and get a Highlander victory to earn a share of the title.
