Georgia Defeats CSUN in Radisson Thanksgiving Classic Championship Game

Sophomore Serafina Maulupe Leads Matadors with 14 Points
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (1-5) lost 83-58 to Georgia Saturday afternoon in the Championship Game of the 2015 Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Classic at The Matadome. Sophomore Serafina Maulupe led the Matadors with 14 points, but the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a fast start and never looked back in claiming the tournament title.Â
Facing a senior-laden roster, the Matadors fell behind 30-16 after one period of play. Sophomore Tessa Boagni scored the first basket of the contest, but Georgia responded with a 22-8 run to lead 22-10 with 3:21 left in the period. The Lady Bulldogs shot 12-of-21 (57.1 percent)  and had nine assists and zero turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.Â
In the second period, CSUN got to within 13 after a lay-up from Jasmine Johnson with roughly eight minutes left in the half. However, Georgia again responded with an 11-0 run to take a 42-18 lead with 3:35 left in the period. The Lady Bulldogs eventually led 51-28 at halftime and shot 51.6 percent compared to 38.5 percent for the Matadors.Â
After halftime, CSUN saw the deficit swell to 30 (62-32) with just a little more than five minutes in the period. By the end of the third, CSUN trailed 74-41. The Matadors won the fourth period, out-scoring the Lady Bulldogs 17-9 over the final period.Â
Maulupe finished 5-of-10 from the field and knocked down her only 3-point attempt of the contest. She averaged 16.5 points over the two games at the event to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.Â
Boagni was the second Matador to finish in double-figures, scoring 11 points to go with four rebounds and a steal in 32 minutes. Johnson added nine points and seven rebounds while freshman Channon Fluker matched for the team lead with seven boards to go with seven points.Â
As a team, CSUN finished at 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range. Georgia finished at 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the field and 25 percent (6-of-24) from 3-point range.Â
The Lady Bulldogs held a narrow 40-38 advantage on the glass and committed just eight turnovers in the game. CSUN committed 19 turnovers, which resuled in 26 points for Georgia.Â
Tiaria Griffin led Georgia with 25 points and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Shacobia Barbee added 18 points and eight rebounds to also earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.Â
In the earlier contest Saturday, BYU defeated Penn State 63-51. BYU senior Lexi Rydalch had 24 points and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
CSUN hits the road for its next two games, traveling to the state of Utah to face Southern Utah (Dec. 1) and Utah (Dec. 3). Live stats and live video will be available for both contests. The Matadors' next home game will be on Dec. 7 against San Diego State. Â
