CSUN Blanks Utah State 4-0 in Vegas Finale
2/15/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
CSUN's 8-2 start on the season marks the Matadors' best start through 10 games since the 1994 season, when NFCA Hall of Famer Gary Torgeson's team started 9-1. That team went on to play for the National Championship in Oklahoma City.
Elder (3-1) was a dominant force in the circle for CSUN. A day after a tough start against Utah, the senior from Concord, Calif. struck out 15 batters to establish a new career high. Earlier this season, she had 12 strikeouts in a victory over Wisconsin and her previous career high of 13 came against Portland State in 2014.Â
She allowed just four hits and a walk in seven innings of work. For the season, she is 3-1 with a 2.69 ERA and 41 Ks in 28.2 innings of work.Â
"I thought the girls did a good job of answering back. Brianna came out and set the tone today. We got back to work and grabbed the momentum heading into next weekend," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said.Â
After posting two steals in Saturday's victory over Indiana, sophomore Taylor Nate recorded a career-high three stolen bases Sunday. She scored the Matadors' first run of the game, coming home after stealing second and third on an RBI single from Madison Fleming.Â
In the fifth, CSUN added three runs to further back up Elder's performance. Fleming was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt single from Kaitlin Toerner. With one out, Glover roped her first triple of the season into right-center to score them both.Â
Glover then scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Katie Hooper. Nate's third stolen base came in the sixth when she started the inning by reaching on an error.Â
Toerner batted an even .500 during the five games in Vegas. Glover finished at .462 with two home runs, seven runs, four RBIs, four walks and four stolen bases. Hooper also posted a .462 average to go with two home runs, nine RBIs, four runs, two walks and a stolen base.Â
The Matadors return to action from Feb. 20-22 with five games in Phoenix, Ariz. as part of the GCU Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon University. CSUN will play three games against the host Antelopes and two against Weber State with all the games played on Grand Canyon's campus.Â
