PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (9-3) lost 3-1 to Weber State and defeated Grand Canyon 8-3 Friday in its first day at the GCU Invitational on the campus of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. In the Matadors' 8-3 victory over the host Antelopes, sophomore Katie Hooper tied a school record with seven RBIs and two home runs.
"Katie was aggressively patient and jumped on pitches when they missed. Her teammates are doing a good job setting the table and Katie is cashing in on those situations," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "It is nice to have some momentum for Saturday, but it is a new day. It is going to be a dogfight all weekend and a tough challenge for us."
CSUN returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21 with two more games at the GCU Invitational. The Matadors will play Grand Canyon at 9 a.m. (PT) and Weber State at 2 p.m. (PT) with both games at Grand Canyon University.Â
Grand Canyon Recap
The CSUN softball team (9-3) rebounded from its loss to Weber State with an 8-3 victory over Grand Canyon in its second game Friday. Sophomore Katie Hooper tied a school record with her seven RBIs and two home runs, including a grand slam. The performance was the second two-home run game of Hooper's career.Â
A sophomore from Burbank, Hooper tied former Matador Jan Moshier for the most RBIs in a single game. Moshier drove in seven in a win over Penn on Mar. 9, 2006.Â
Hooper drove in CSUN's first three runs of the contest against Grand Canyon. In the first, she collected an RBI single to score Taylor Glover and added another RBI single to score Kaitlin Toerner in the second. Â
After the Antelopes got a solo home run in the bottom of the second, Hooper delivered a solo shot of her own to give CSUN a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Savannah Horvath would add her team-leading fourth double to score Taylor Nate during the frame.Â
In the sixth, Toerner drew a walk and Carissa Sherman and Glover singled on the infield to load the bases. Hooper unloaded her fifth home run of the season to give CSUN its final 8-3 advantage. She now has 16 RBIs over her past seven games and 18 for the season.Â
In the circle, Brianna Elder (4-1) put together a strong performance. The senior fanned 10 Antelope batters to post her third double-digit strikeout performance of the season. She allowed three runs with two walks and six hits over six innings to earn her fourth win of the season.Â
Zoe Conley tossed a spotless seventh for CSUN, getting one strikeout. Sherman and Glover each had two hits in the victory while Glover stole her team-leading eighth base of the season.Â
Weber State Recap
The CSUN softball team (8-3) lost 3-1 to Weber State in both teams' opening game at the GCU Invitational Friday morning in Phoenix, Ariz. Taylor Nate finished 2-for-3 with her second home run of the season, but the Matadors could not string together enough hits to complete the comeback against the Wildcats.Â
Despite out-hitting Weber State 6-5, CSUN finished with just one at-bat in the game with runners in scoring position. The Matadors could not bring that runner home and Nate's solo shot in the sixth, her second of the season, was all the offense they could muster.Â
Ariana Wassmer finished with two hits in the game for CSUN while Katie Hooper and Taylor Glover each added a single.Â
The Wildcats struck for a run in the second and the third off CSUN starter Jordan Sauceda (1-1). She lasted 2.1 innings, surrendering four hits and walk. Daphne Pofek allowed a solo home run in 1.2 innings of work. Finally, Zoe Conley struck out three batters in the final 2.0 innings of work.Â
CSUN struggled against Weber State starter McCauley Flint (2-2), The senior finished with eight strikeouts and zero walks in the complete game victory. Weber State now leads the all-time series with CSUN 2-1, having won the last two meetings.
