NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (13-3) defeated St. John's 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in its 2015 home opener at Matador Diamond. Freshman Savannah Horvath knocked in the winning run with an RBI single to score sophomore Katie Hooper and give the Matadors the victory in their first home game of the season.Â
Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, CSUN rallied to get the win over the Red Storm. With one out, Hooper singled to right field and then moved to second on an infield single from Carissa Sherman. Down to their final out, Horvath laced a ground ball past the St. John's third baseman to score Hooper and give the Matadors the win.
"It took us a while to make adjustments today, but once we got things figured out, we executed when we needed to," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said.Â
CSUN led 2-0 through five innings despite only having one hit in that duration. In the second with the bases loaded and two outs, Kaitlin Toerner hit a groundball to the third baseman and the subsequent throw to first drew the fielder off the bag. The error allowed Cortney Horne and Horvath to score on the play.Â
CSUN starter Brianna Elder was cruising for most of the game until running into trouble in the top of the sixth. With two outs, St. John's connected on a two-run home run to tie the game. Elder finished the game with 6.0 innings pitched and nine strikeouts.Â
Freshman Zoe Conley (5-1) tossed a quiet seventh inning to earn the win for CSUN. She had two strikeouts and now has 32 strikeouts in 32.2 innings of work this season.Â
Horvath added a stolen base, her second of the year, to her RBI and run scored. Hooper laced her fourth double of the season, tying her for the second-most on the squad.
The Matadors remain at home for their next five games. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, CSUN will play a doubleheader against Utah Valley with first pitch slated for noon. The games had originally been scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, but had to be changed at the last minute due to travel issues.Â
