2/7/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (3-1) defeated New Mexico 5-1 and lost 3-2 in eight innings to Fresno State Saturday in its second day at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
New Mexico Recap
Taylor Glover collected three hits, Katie Hooper smashed her first home run of the season and Daphne Pofek and Crystal Maas combined to toss five innings of shutout relief to help CSUN down the Lobos.Â
The Matadors totaled 11 hits and four for extra bases in the win over their rivals from Albuquerque. CSUN started 3-0 for the first time since 2005 and improved to 21-5 in the all-time series with New Mexico.Â
Offensively, the sophomore and junior class had strong days for the Matadors. Third-year third baseman Maylynn Mitchell added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Fellow junior Ariana Wassmer finished 1-for-1 with a run scored, an RBI, a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base.
Sophomores Glover and Hooper also shined in the win. Glover had three hits, including a double, and scored a run. Hooper mashed her first home run of the season and fourth of her career in the third inning.Â
Another sophomore, Carissa Sherman, got CSUN its first run of the game. She singled to start the game and moved to second on a ground out. She then scored after stealing third with a throwing error on the catcher sending her home on the play.
New Mexico tied the game in its half of the first on CSUN starter Jordan Sauceda. She would go on to toss two innings with one hit and two walks allowed although she did not factor in the decision.Â
CSUN got the lead right back with in the top of the second. Savannah Horvath led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on a Wassmer sac bunt. Sauceda drew a walk and Mitchell then plated Horvath with a single.Â
Hooper's home run in the third made it 3-1 CSUN. In the sixth, Wassmer walked and then moved to second on a sac bunt from Maas. She then stole third and came home on an RBI ground-rule double from Mitchell.
In the seventh, Glover doubled to start the inning. Taylor Nate and Horvath then drew walks to load the bases and Wassmer picked up a sac fly to center field.Â
All that offense was enough for Pofek and Maas. Pofek (1-0) came into relieve Sauceda to start the third and only allowed a walk in two innings of work. Maas picked up her first save of the year by allowing just one hit with two strikeouts over the final three innings.Â
Fresno State Recap
The Matadors suffered their first loss of the year in tough fashion, falling 3-2 in extra innings to Fresno State. CSUN had more hits than the Bulldogs, but left 10 runners on base and lost in extra innings on an error.
The Matadors committed three errors in the field and trailed 2-0 through five innings. CSUN starter Brianna Elder tossed the first five innings for the Matadors, finishing with seven strikeouts and two earned runs.Â
CSUN fought back and tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, freshman Cortney Horne and Ariana Wassmer drew walks. Aliyah Ricks came into run for Horne and scored on an RBI single from Maylynn Mitchell.
Crystal Maas then drew a pinch hit walk to load the bases and Carissa Sherman delivered a single up the middle to score Wassmer. Mitchell was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
With international tie breakers placing a runner at second to start the eighth innings, CSUN could not push a run across in the top half of the frame. The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the innings when the runner at second stole third and the throw went into left field.Â
Zoe Conley tossed the final two innings for CSUN, allowing one hit with one strikeout.Â
CSUN concludes its time in Tempe on Sunday when it takes on the host No. 16 Arizona State Sun Devils. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. (PT) // 2 p.m. (MT).Â
