Extra, Extra: CSUN Rallies to Take Doubleheader from UC Davis
4/3/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
"The wins today speak to the character of the team. They believe in themselves and in each other and know they are always in every game," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "To see us come back in the bottom of the seventh in game two was great and we never stopped fighting all day."Â
Game One Recap
CSUN overcame a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth and scored the winning run in the seventh to post a 3-2 victory over UC Davis.Â
The Aggies scored a run on CSUN starter Brianna Elder in the bottom of the second inning. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, CSUN rallied for two runs to take the lead. With two outs, Kaitlin Toerner tripled to right field and then scored on an RBI single from Taylor Nate. Taylor Glover then brought Nate home with an RBI double.
After UC Davis scored the tying run in the bottom of the fifth, CSUN punched in a run in the top of the seventh to win the series opener.Â
Toerner started the inning with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and then advanced to third on a base hit from Nate. Glover then singled to left to bring in Toerner and give CSUN its final 3-2 advantage.Â
Elder made the start, but did not factor in the decision in game one. She went 4.2 innings with four hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. Zoe Conley (13-4) earned the win with 2.1 innings of hitless relief work with two strikeouts.Â
Toerner, Nate and Glover each had two hits in the victory.Â
Game Two Recap
In a three-hour, 12-inning contest, Taylor Nate roped a triple in the top of the 12th inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Taylor Glover to give CSUN a 4-3 win in the second game Friday.
CSUN fought back the entire game, battling until its last strike. Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Katie Hooper delivered a two-strike, two-out, two-run triple to score Kaitlin Toerner and Maylynn Mitchell.Â
Neither team could take advantage of scoring opportunities until Nate and Glover teamed up for the game-winning run.Â
Zoe Conley made the start for CSUN and had a no-hitter going through the first five innings of work. Unfortunately, UCD struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.Â
The Matadors struck first in game two, scoring a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Mitchell.
Mitchell tied a career high with four hits in the game, including two doubles. She added a run scored and an RBI and she now has a career-high seven two-base hits on the year.
The triple was Nate's second of the season and the first for Hooper this year. Crystal Maas and Nate each had sacrifice bunts and Toerner stole her fifth base of the year in the victory.Â
In the circle, Elder was nearly unhittable in relief. She allowed just a single hit to go with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings to improve to 13-3 on the season.Â
With the two wins Friday, CSUN has won its past two conference series with UC Davis. The Matadors won its series with the Aggies as the road team for the first time since the 2009 season.Â
The Matadors and Aggies will play a single game at noon on Saturday, April 4. CSUN remains on the road next week, traveling to UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series featuring a doubleheader on April 11 and a single game on April 12.Â
