CSUN Softball Falls to UCLA in NCAA Tournament
5/16/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (41-16) lost 9-1 in five innings to seventh-seeded UCLA Friday evening in an NCAA Tournament regional at Easton Stadium. Sophomore Katie Hooper blasted her 16th home run of the season to tie the school record for RBIs and give the Matadors an early 1-0 advantage, but the Bruins' offense awoke in the third and fourth inning to score nine runs and secure the victory.Â
Playing in their first postseason since 2007, the visiting Matadors could not have asked for a better start to Friday's game. With two out in the first, Hooper blasted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right field to give CSUN the early advantage.
She now has 56 RBIs on the season, tying Shannon Jones (1996) for the school record for a single season. Her 16 home runs are the second-most in school history in a single season. She added a single later in the game and was a perfect 2-for-2 in the loss.Â
In the first two innings, CSUN starter Zoe Conley (19-6) managed to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard. She had two strikeouts in the first inning and induced a fielder's choice and a fly out in the second to avoid damage in a bases loaded, one-out situation.Â
However, UCLA made some adjustments and hit three home runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Bruins' starting pitcher, Ally Carda, hit the first home run in the third and added a two-run single in the fourth to fully back up her cause in the circle.
Conley allowed five runs and seven hits to go with three strikeouts  in 2.1 innings of work. Brianna Elder tossed the final 1.2 innings for CSUN, giving up four hits and four runs.Â
Taylor Glover and Maylynn Mitchell each had base hits in the loss. Carda finished with three strikeouts and two walks to earn her 27th win of the season.Â
The Matadors return to action Saturday, May 16 against San Diego State at Easton Stadium at approximately 2:30 p.m. The winner of the game will advance to play the loser of the UCLA-Texas game at approximately 5:30 p.m. for a spot in Sunday's regional finale.Â
