Matadors Hit Road for Next Three Matches
En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (1-3-1) played to a scoreless draw with CSU Bakersfield Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Despite controlling the possession for most of the match and firing off seven shots on goal, the Matadors were unable to strike paydirt and settled for a draw with the Roadrunners after 110 minutes.
"I thought we controlled the play and did a good job of keeping possession of the ball. We just need to find a better rhythm and combination when we get into the attacking third," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "Our defense did a great job this weekend of not allowing any goals in the run of the play. It's not just the backline or the goalkeeper, but the entire team that is buying into our defensive scheme."
CSUN had a good deal of chances in a physical contest that saw the teams combine for 38 fouls and seven yellow cards. In the first half, Steven Manios, Trevor Morley, Jules Cailliau and David Turcios each produced a shot that forced a save from the CSUB goalkeeper. After 45 minutes, CSUN held a 5-1 advantage in shots.
In the second half, CSUN continued to search for a goal. Turcios had a low liner saved and a CSUN goal was called off due to an offsides penalty. Shane Steffes also had a look at goal early in the frame, but to no avail.
The first overtime period may have seen CSUN's best chance at a winner. Following a corner kick, Stuart Close had a bicycle kick stopped at close range and Morley rang a shot off the crossbar. The second overtime featured just one shot between the two teams, a blast from Victor Vasquez that sailed well over the crossbar.
Three Matadors were cautioned in Sunday's match: Papi Diouf (12th minute), Juan Fernando Samayoa (13th minute) and Manios (96th minute). Four Roadrunners went into the referee's book after seeing the yellow card, all of which came after halftime.
CSUN generated five corner kicks and held CSUB without one in the match. Adam Hobbs made a pair of routine saves in net for the Matadors to post his 10th career shutout to move into fifth in program history. Manios and Turcios led the Matadors with two three shots in the match.
The Matadors hit the road for their next three contests, traveling to Northern California next week for a pair of matches against West Coast Conference foes. On Friday, Sept. 18, CSUN squares off with the Saint Mary's Gaels in a 4 p.m. affair. Two days later, CSUN meets with the Santa Clara Broncos in a 1 p.m. fixture. On Friday, Sept. 25, CSUN will travel to San Diego to face the Toreros at 7:30 p.m. in a match that will follow a CSUN-USD women's soccer match.
