Matadors Face Three-Straight WCC Foes

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN Matadors (1-3-1) start a three-match roadtrip against West Coast Conference opponents this weekend with a pair of matches in Northern California. On Friday, Sept. 19, the Matadors will face the Saint Mary's Gaels in a 4 p.m. contest. Two days later, CSUN will face the Santa Clara Broncos in a 1 p.m. fixture. Both contests will feature live video and live stats with links available at GoMatadors.com. Last weekend, CSUN went 0-1-1 in a pair of contests at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN suffered an 1-0 overtime loss to New Mexico before posting a 0-0 draw with CSU Bakersfield. Despite the results, the Matadors' defense looked especially sharp in the two games and did not allow a goal in the run of play in over 205 minutes of action. In fact, the Matadors have not allowed a goal in the run of play over the last 233 minutes of action.Â
Redshirt sophomore Steven Manios continues to lead the team with two goals and five points on the season. Dean Wright and Pol Schonhofer Bartra own the other two CSUN goals in 2015. Four Matadors have recorded their first career assist in a CSUN kit in 2015: Jules Cailliau, Papi Diouf, Adam Hobbs and Shane Steffes.Â
With the shutout against the Roadrunners, Hobbs moved into fifth in program history with 10 for his career. Senior Trevor Morley, a team captain, was named one of 30 Candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award. Junior Patrick Hickman also continues to shine, having played every minute of every match this season. CSUN is also getting contributions from its younger players as freshman Jumoke Hutton has started every contest and fellow rookie Chester Castellaw has started four matches in 2015.
Scouting Saint Mary's
The Saint Mary's Gaels bring a 3-3 record into the week and will face UC Davis on Wednesday, Sept. 16 before hosting the Matadors on Friday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. The Gaels carry victories over La Salle, Canisius and Oral Roberts in the 2015 campaign while producing eight goals and 23 points.Â
Stephen Dougherty leads SMC with two goals and four points on the year. He also has 10 shots and a team-high seven attempts on goal. Will Kendall has a goal and an assist on the season for three points and leads the Gaels with 15 shots on the season. Five other players have scored while Michael Dingle leads the team with two assists.Â
In goal, Lucas Champenois and Andre Konstantino have split time equally with each playing 280 minutes of the action. Konstantino sports a 0.96 goals-against-average, 10 saves and two wins while Champenois has 16 saves with one win and a 1.61 GAA on the season. Saint Mary's averages 12 shots per game and has taken 33 corner kicks on the year.Â
CSUN leads the all-time series with Saint Mary's 4-2 with the last victory coming in overtime at Matador Soccer Field during the 2013 season. The Matadors' only win on the road in the series came in the 2003 campaign with a 4-3 victory. Adam Cooper is in his 10th season as the head coach of Saint Mary's.
Scouting Santa ClaraÂ
The Santa Clara Broncos carry a 2-4 record into the week and will host UC Riverside on Sept. 18 before facing the Matadors on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. The Broncos are in the middle of a seven-match homestand in which they have scored victories over Wisconsin and Cal Poly while falling to Cal State Fullerton and Seattle.Â
Four Broncos have a goal on the season and both Carlos Delgadillo and Alfred Edmonds each have a goal, an assist and three points on the season. Santa Clara is averaging nine shots per game and taken 25 corner kicks on the season. All four of the Broncos' goals this season have come after halftime.Â
In goal, Kendall McIntosh has played over 538 minutes and owns a 1.34 GAA, 18 saves and a .692 save percentage. Santa Clara has committed 69 fouls and seen 18 yellow cards on the season. Opponents have averaged 10.8 shots per game on the year.Â
The all-time series between CSUN and Santa Clara is tied at 3-3. The two programs have not met since the 2006 season, a 4-1 CSUN victory at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors' only victory on the road in the series came in a 1-0 decision in 1998. Cameron Rast is in his 13th season as the head coach of Santa Clara.
Matador Team Notes
With two saves against CSU Bakersfield, Adam Hobbs moved into fifth in program history with 10 career shutouts ... Since the start of the 2009 season, the Matadors are 5-5 against West Coast Conference opponents and own a 15-9 goal differential in those matches ... CSUN did not play a WCC team in 2014, 2011 and 2008 ... Andrew Rizeq and Jeremy Degraffenreidt both made their first career apperances as Matadors in matches last week against New Mexico and CSU Bakersfield ... all three of CSUN's losses have come to teams who are either ranked or receiving votes in the Sept. 15 NSCAA national poll ... CSUN has 13 yellow cards, the most in the Big West Conference and the seventh-most in the NCAA Division I ... Santa Clara leads all of Division I with 18 yellow cards while Saint Mary's already has 14 on the season.

CSUN has just one game next week, traveling South to face the University of San Diego Toreros on Friday, Sept. 25. The match is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and is part of a CSUN-USD soccer doubleheader with the CSUN women's program facing USD at 5 p.m.Â
