Offensive Outburst Carries CSUN Past Saint Mary's 4-1

Senior Carlos Gonzalez Records Hat Trick
MORAGA, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (2-3-1) defeated Saint Mary's 4-1 Friday afternoon in a non-conference match. Trailing 1-0 in the first half, CSUN got a penalty kick goal from Trevor Morley and a brace from Carlos Gonzalez before halftime en route to the 4-1 victory.
Gonzalez, who had not scored since his freshman season in 2012, scored the fourth and final goal for the Matadors. The hat trick was the first by a CSUN player since Sagi Lev-Ari scored three in a Big West Conference Tournament semifinal at UCSB on Nov. 15, 2013.
"We played well with one another up top and combined well. Carlos getting a hat trick is wonderful. It is great for his confidence," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "We defended well also, especially on set pieces. We did well putting numbers behind the ball and competing in the air."
The Matadors did not hang their heads at all after Saint Mary's scored the first goal in the 23rd minute. Rafael Sanchez made a long run down the left side of the pitch and beat a diving Hobbs to his left.
The Matadors quickly evened the score on a penalty kick goal. Kevin Martinez played a nice through ball to Jeremy Degraffenreidt, who was tackled in the box. Alex Braman saw the yellow card for the Gaels and Trevor Morley calmly converted the penalty kick with a blast to the lower left corner. The goal was the first of Morley's CSUN career.
CSUN went ahead with a pair of goals from Carlos Gonzalez in the 32nd minute. The first came off a clever play from a corner kick. Kevin Martinez played the ball short to Dean Wright, who curled in a cross that Gonzalez headed past the Gaels goalkeeper.
Just 24 seconds later, Gonzalez and Wright combined for a goal to give the Matadors a 3-1 advantage. The goals were a great way for the Matadors to snap a scoreless streak of approximately 250 minutes.
Wright picked up his first two assists of the season while the helper was the first of Martinez's CSUN career.
In the second half, neither team produced many quality efforts. CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs made four of his six saves in the second half, although only one or two of the attempts really offered a challenge. Hobbs is now eighth in school history with 152 career saves.
With the Gaels pressing to find a goal to get them back into the match, Andrew Rizeq and David Turcios combined to put Gonzalez into a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. The senior nestled the ball into the netting in the 88th minute for his first career hat trick.
The assist was the first of the season for Turcios and 19th of his career. He needs just two more to move into a tie for 10th in program history with 21 career assists. The assist was the first of Rizeq's career.
CSUN improved to 5-2-0 in the all-time series with Saint Mary's. The Matadors are now 6-5 against West Coast Conference opponents since the start of the 2009 season and own a 19-10 goal differential in those contests. The win was also the 26th road or neutral victory for the Matadors since the start of the 2010 season.
In all, Saint Mary's finished with 14 shots to nine for CSUN. The Matadors committed 14 fouls and Victor Vasquez saw the yellow card in the 83rd minute. Saint Mary's committed 11 fouls and had one yellow card.
The Matadors return to action Sunday, Sept. 20 with a road match at Santa Clara. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
