NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (6-3) was unable to overcome an early two-goal deficit, as the Matadors fell 3-1 to the Santa Clara Broncos (5-3) on Friday night at Stevens Stadium. Briana Geffre assisted Tabatha Dickson on the Matadors' only goal in the 88th minute. Both Geffre and Dickson earned their first points of the season with Geffre talling her first career point in the match.
Despite outshooting the Broncos 13-11 in the contest including 9-4 in corner kick opportunities, the Matadors trailed for nearly the entire 90:00 minutes. Santa Clara was able to play in front for most of the match after connecting on a pair of early goals.
Shortly after Lyndsey Preston delivered a shot that was saved, Santa Clara took the lead in the eighth minute of play as Jenna Roering struck the back of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead.
CSUN looked to tie the match up just a minute later, as Dickson fired at the goal but Andi Tostanoski stopped her shot at the net. The save was one of five on the evening for Tostanoski.
The Broncos were able to add to their lead in the 22nd minute. Capitalizing off a corner kick, Julie Vass hooked in a long shot from outside the left box, stretching the Santa Clara advantage.
CSUN was able to put forth solid scoring chances throughout the first half but could not cash in. Ariana Tran registered a shot on goal while Kendall Moskal and Kiley Norkus each had their shot attempts blocked just before intermission.
In the second half, CSUN continued to generate opportunities at the net, but Santa Clara was able to keep the Matadors scoreless for nearly the remainder of the match.
Trailing by a pair in the 76th minute, CSUN committed a costly foul inside its own box that turned the tide of the contest over the final minutes. The Broncos were awarded a penalty shot and took advantage. Dani Weatherholt connected on the penalty kick to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Matadors continued to battle until the final minutes where they ended the Broncos' shutout bid in the 88th minute. Off the Matadors' sixth corner kick of the night, Geffre delivered a pass to Dickson who headed in her first goal of 2015.
Over the final two minutes, CSUN earned three more corner kick opportunities but Santa Clara would hold the Matadors off the scoreboard the rest of the way to earn the victory.
"We were able to outshoot them and do some things really well tonight," said head coach Keith West. "At times we looked like the same team that has been able to have success this season but there were other times where we struggled. Lack of consistency was crucial tonight."
CSUN will resume its road trip with a Sunday afternoon matchup at San Jose State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
