NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (5-1) earned a 3-0 victory against the Detroit Titans (2-4) on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field to post its first five-game winning steak since 2005. Cynthia Sanchez scored her sixth goal of the season while Lindsay Kutscher and Kendall Moskal each tallied their first goals of 2015.
Â
"I knew coming into this season, we had a really good team," said head coach Keith West. "We are scoring goals and the team is focused. We are playing great as a whole right now."
Â
CSUN wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard at the outset of the contest. In the 2nd minute of play, the Matadors forced a Detroit turnover near midfield, allowing Lyndsey Preston to kick ahead to a streaking Sanchez. The sophomore forward raced to the goal and fired a shot past a diving Marina Manzo into the net.
Â
The Matadors continued to apply the pressure after the early score. Minutes later, CSUN earned a corner kick opportunity, resulting in another Matador goal.
Â
Kourtney Kutscher fired a well-placed kick into a crowd deep into the Detroit box. Moskal retrieved the pass and shot at the goal but Manzo saved the shot and tapped the ball back into play. Keeping the play alive, Lindsay Kutscher rebounded and shot at the goal, hitting the back of the net to move CSUN ahead 2-0.
Â
Utilizing the momentum of the two early goals, the CSUN defense shutout the Detroit offense for the remainder of the afternoon. The Matadors held the Titans to three shots in the first half and one after halftime. Detroit was also limited to one shot on goal in the match.
Â
The Matadors took advantage of another corker kick shortly after intermission to add to their lead. Off a corner kick from Sylvia Trinh, Nicole Thompson passed to Moskal who used her good field positioning inside the box to net her first goal of the season.Â
Â
"With the way she played, Kendall was probably the player of the game today," said West about Moskal. "She really got after it and she gave the team energy."
Â
With her goal on Sunday, Sanchez extended her goal streak to five-straight games. Her goal against Detroit was her sixth of the season, putting her in a four-way tie for the ninth-most goals in a season in school history. Other former Matadors tied with Sanchez with six goals in a season are Kristal Phillips (2006), Leila Pate (2003) and Gentry Green (1999).
Â
Kutscher's goal in the first half was her first points of her collegiate career. After redshirting in 2014, the freshman has started in five matches and has appeared in all six contests for CSUN.
Â
Trinh also earned her first point of her CSUN career, as she assisted on the Matadors' third goal on the day. The redshirt junior missed the entire 2013 season and most of the 2014 season due to an injury. Thus far in 2015, Trinh has played in all six games, making one start while posting two shots on goal.
Â
The five-game winning streak is the longest for West in his 10 years as head coach of CSUN Women's Soccer. Named head coach of the program in 2006, West's teams had posted two different four-game winning streaks over the course of his coaching tenure.
Â
The Matadors hit the road for its longest break away from Matador Soccer Field of the season beginning on Friday, Sept. 11. CSUN will face Washington in the opener of the Nike Portland Invitational. The Matadors will face Washington on Friday and Portland on Sunday, Sept. 13 to start their five-game road trip. Kickoff for Friday's contest with Washington will be at 4:30 p.m.Â
