Hawai'i Defeats CSUN Women's Hoops

Serafina Maulupe Scores 17 Points in Defeat
HONOLULU --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-14, 0-2 Big West) lost 77-50 to Hawai'i Thursday night in a Big West Conference contest at the Stan Sheriff Center. Sophomore Serafina Maulupe led the Matadors with 17 points, but CSUN could not slow down a Hawai'i offense that shot 55.6 percent from the field in the victory.Â
Maulupe finished 7-of-17 from the field and 3-of-7 from downtown in the loss. She added a team-high four rebounds and three steals in 36 minutes of action and is averaging 11.4 points per game for the season. She also leads the Matadors with 18 3-pointers, 46 assists and 25 steals on the year.Â
Freshman Nautica Morrow was second on the team with eight points. She knocked down two 3-pointers and had one assist and one steal in 16 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Tessa Boagni added seven points, three rebounds, two steals and a block in 24 minutes of work.Â
Neither team started the game sharply, but Hawai'i eventually took a 19-12 lead after the conclusion of the first period. The second period saw Hawai'i come out of the gates quickly and build an 18-point lead with 2:33 left before halftime. CSUN was able to score the last five points of the period to cut the lead to 37-24 after 20 minutes of action.Â
In the third period, Hawai'i asserted itself on the offensive end and started the period on a 19-5 run. CSUN trailed 62-37 after 30 minutes of action and Hawai'i out-scored CSUN 15-12 in the fourth.Â
The Rainbow Wahine held a 41-22 advantage in rebounds and had 19 assists in the contest. CSUN forced 12 turnovers which it converted into nine points while only turning the ball over eight times as a team.Â
Ashleigh Karaitiana led Hawai'i with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.Â
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at The Matadome at 4 p.m. The game is part of a CSUN Basketball In-N-Out Doubleheader and will be followed by a CSUN-UC Riverside men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.Â
