Matadors Host Gauchos in CSUN Basketball In-N-Out Doubleheader

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-13, 0-1 Big West Conference) travels to Hawai'i before hosting UC Santa Barbara in a pair of Big West Conference contests. On Thursday, Jan. 14, the Matadors make the voyage to Honolulu to face the Rainbow Wahine before returning to the continental United States for a 4 p.m. game against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 16. The contest against the Gauchos is part of an In-N-Out Doubleheader and will be followed by a CSUN-UC Riverside men's basketball game. Last week, the Matadors lost a 75-52 to UC Davis in both teams' Big West Conference opener. Sophomore Tessa Boagni scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting and knocked down a career-high two 3-pointers. Freshman Channon Fluker (12 points) and Cheyenne Allen (10 points) came off the bench to reach double-figures and Fluker led CSUN with eight rebounds.Â
This week, CSUN will face off with a pair of league rivals as the 2016 Big West schedule continues to unfold. Hawai'i, who won the Big West regular season title in 2015, are 1-1 on the campaign after knocking off Long Beach State and losing at UC Davis. The Rainbow Wahine are a tough defensive team, limiting opponents to 25.4 percent shooting from 3-point range and holding a +7.9 rebounding margin.Â
Two days later, UC Santa Barbara comes to the San Fernando Valley for the first of two CSUN basketball games at The Matadome that day. The Gauchos have won of three of their last four games and knocked off their rival, Cal Poly, 78-67 to start the Big West Conference season.Â
Next week, CSUN travels to San Luis Obispo, CA for a Big West Conference game at Cal Poly on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. in Mott Gym. Two days later, CSUN and Hawai'i renew acquaintances quickly with a 4 p.m. contest at The Matadome on Saturday, Jan. 23. Both games will be broadcast live and for free on the CSUN Sports Network and via BigWest.TV.
Scouting Hawai'i
- The Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine enter the week with an 8-7 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Big West Conference actionÂ
- Last week, Hawai'i knocked off Long Beach State 67-55 at the Walter Pyramid before falling 60-58 at UC DavisÂ
- Against the 49ers, sophomore guard Sarah Toeaina scored a team-high 14 points and senior center Kalei Adolpho had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards
- For the season, senior guard Destiny King is leading the team in scoring at 9.8 points per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the field
- Sophomore forward Megan Huff is second on the team at 8.2 ppg and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.8 per gameÂ
- In all, the Rainbow Wahine feature seven players that average 5.9 to 9.8 ppg and eight players that average at least 2.0 rebounds per game
- The Rainbow Wahine average 41.0 rebounds per game while holding their opponents to an average of 33.1 rebounds
- Hawai'i leads the all-time series with CSUN 7-3, but the Matadors have never won in Honolulu in four chances
- The last meeting between the two schools was a 67-60 CSUN victory in the 2015 Big West Tournament Championship game

Scouting UC Santa Barbara
- The UC Santa Barbara is 4-12 on the season and 1-1 in Big West play after the first week of the league season
- UCSB plays at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Jan. 14 before heading to CSUN for a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 16
- The Gauchos posted a 78-67 home victory over Cal Poly in the conference opener before falling 83-53 to UC Riverside two days later
- Against the Mustangs, UCSB shot 55.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range while holding a 35-33 advantage in rebounding
- Sophomore Makala Roper led five Gauchos in double-figures with 19 points, including four 3-pointersÂ
- Fellow sophomore Chaya Durr added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while a third sophomore, Taylor Farris, came off the bench to add 14
- For the season, Roper is averaging a team-best 12.3 ppg while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from 3-point range
- Senior Jasmine Ware and freshman Coco Miller are averaging more than 9.0 ppg for the yearÂ
- Freshman forward Kali Jones is averaging a team-best 5.2 rebounds per game while junior Je Zhe Newton is second at 4.9 per contest
- As a team, UCSB is shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from 3-point range while averaging 59.2 points per game
- Although the Gauchos lead the all-time series with CSUN 41-15, the Matadors have won the last four contests between the schools
